Notes: Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been applied to the study of the topography of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fibers before and after electrochemical surface treatments. The results show that the electrical anodic oxidation only changes the surface aspects; at nanometric resolution; the nanostructure and nanotexture such as the step-like crystallite stacking are decreased with increasing electric current densities.

Notes: The electrical properties of poly(α-chloroacrylonitrile) (PCIAN) carbon black compositions were determined. These materials were prepared by polymerizing α-chloroacrylonitrile in the presence of carbon black (GC resistors). Resistivities measurement of GC resistors shows a semiconductor-like behavior. Moreover, the resistance change of GC resistors with electrical field strength is very large. It is concluded that the conduction of GC resistors is controlled by the thin polymer layer present at the surface of the carbon black particles. Heat degradation of such compositions was also investigated: A significant weight loss above 150°C is observed in all cases which can be attributed to thermal dehydrochlorination of PCIAN. After heat treatment at 300°C, during 1 h, the resistivities decrease of about 1 order of magnitude because of the formation of a semiconducting polyconjugated polymer by dehydrochlorination of PCIAN.

Notes: Anionic grafting of polyisoprene and polystyrene by desactivation of a living polymer on the ester groups previosly introduced on the carbon black surface has been followed as a function of the molecular weight of the polymer. The desactivation reaction is limited. A correclation between the grafting ratios and the molecular weights exists. If we assume the macromolecule to behave like spheres having a radius identical to the gyration radius calculated from the viscosity measurement, we will be able to determine the surface coverage of the solid sample. A constant value equal to 1,5 is thus obtained for all the polymers having molecular weights ranging from 4 000 to 135 000. A surface coverage of 1 would correspond to ellipsoids showing axes ratios in close agreement with those calculated statistically by KUHN.

Notes: Polystyrene or polystyrene-polyisoprene copolymers have been grafted onto silica by an anionic procedure. The solvent resistance of the grafts has been examined. Linear relationships between the extractable amount of polymer and the solvent extraction temperatures are observed. The extrapolation of these lines leads to temperatures that are in close agreement with the ceiling temperatures of the grafted polymers.

Notes: Photocrosslinking experiments were performed on elastomeric polymer films (EPDM) that contained benzoin derivatives as photosensitive initiators. Infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy investigations were used in conjunction with physical property measurements. The results all together make it possible to discuss the crosslinking mechanism and pose interesting questions about the reactivity of benzoin derivatives in their excited states in relation to their efficiency in the crosslinking process.

Notes: Photocrosslinking experiments were performed on elastomeric polymer films (EPDM) previously modified by grafting a photosensitive initiator (benzoin derivative) onto the macromolecular backbone. This modification was performed by a series of Friedel-Crafts reactions and the resulting materials were characterized by infrared (IR) spectroscopy in conjunction with model reactions. After ultraviolet (UV) irradiation the photocrosslinked samples were studied by IR spectroscopy in conjunction with the measurement of physical properties. It apperared that grafting the photosensitizer onto the elastomer considerably enhances the crosslinking reaction even with a limited quantity of grafted benzoin derivative. Moreover, the results obtained suggest that the structure of the resulting networks is strongly dependent on the crosslinking process used; that is, curing the elastomer with peroxide or UV irradiation either of a blend of elastomer and photosensitizer or of the same elastomer modified by grafting the chromophore.
