Notes: The synthesis and physical properties are described for a thermally stable liquid crystalline (LC) thermoset based on all aromatic ester units. The persistence of the liquid crystalline phase throughout the curing process was monitored with polarizing optical microscopy. The applicability of these new liquid crystalline thermosets has been evaluated for use as an adhesive for bonding metals, namely titanium. The failure of the adhesive bonds always occurs within the polymer; thus it can be inferred that bonding at the polymer-metal interface is very good. This strong interfacial bonding is attributed to low cure shrinkage and CTE matching of the underlying substrate by the LC resins. The cohesive properties and strength of the cured resin can be greatly enhanced by the addition of filler materials. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 35:1061-1067, 1997

Notes: In polymers for microelectronics applications, moisture is known to have a deleterious effect upon device reliability. In this paper, the moisture transport behaviors of a newly developed family of all-aromatic and aromatic/aliphatic copolyester thermosetting films were described. The moisture uptake as a function of temperature, relative humidity, sample thickness, and processing conditions were presented via conjugate moisture sorption tests.1 It was found that the post curing near but below Tg resulted in an increase in both total moisture uptake and diffusion coefficient due to the effect of physical aging and the generation of sample defect volume. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) was used to determine the nature of the adhesive bonding which occurs through interchain transesterification (ITR) in thermosetting polyester materials (TS) and in liquid crystalline polyester polymers (LCP). An all aromatic copolyester thermoset was prepared as a deuterated and undeuterated film. These films were cured and then consolidated using heat and pressure to form a good adhesive bond. SIMS produced no direct observation of interdiffusion indicating that the length scale over which it occurred must be less than 500 Å (the resolution of the technique). A similar set of experiments was carried out using a deuterated and non-deuterated film of a liquid crystalline copolyester (LCP) consisting of 73/27 p-hydroxybenzoic acid and 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid. In this case, the deuterated units diffused throughout the entire undeuterated films within less than one hour at 280°C.

Notes: Synthesis of thermoplastic elastomers derived from poly-tetramethylene glycol (PTME glycol), dimethylterephthalate and different mixtures of ethylene and butylene glycol is described. Extended heating near the crystalline melting point of these systems leads to a measurable increase in the melting point of 15-20°C. This ordering process can be reversed by heating at 250°C or well above the melting point. These results are interpreted in terms of sequence ordering within existing crystallites via interchain transesterification on heating near the melting point. Heating at 250°C is best explained as randomization of the ordered ester units.

Notes: A new approach for design of improved interfacial bonding between carbon fibers and polymeric matrices is described. In this method the affinity of surface-treated carbon fibers to various polymer matrices is simulated by analyzing the adsorption characteristics of model compounds, typical of the polymer units, onto very high surface area carbon fibers. The affinity can be evaluated by the use of Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) to measure adsorption-desorption characteristics. Since high surface area, activated carbon fibers (ACF) can be chemically treated to obtain acidic, basic, nonpolar or highly polar surfaces, it should be possible to assess the interactions of chemically modified surfaces with model compounds such as methanol (MeOH), acetone, dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethylether, tetrahydrofuran (THF) and water. Some preliminary results are presented, indicating that surface treatments for carbon fibers other than oxidation may lead to enhanced bonding with polymeric matrices.

Notes: Fabrication of oxidation-resistant carbon fiber reinforced carbon composites requires use of high-temperature CVD deposition of coatings such as SiC. In this paper the use of low-temperature chemical approaches for depositing oxidation-resistant coatings was explored. Coatings of SiO2, B2O3, and SiC were examined, with the intent of distinguishing possible failure mechanisms. Factors contributing to poor oxidation resistance of these coatings include presence of microcracks in the original preparation of the coating and diffusion of oxygen through the coating at high temperatures.

Notes: The structure of the aromatic copolyester of poly(ethylene terephthalate) and 80 mol % of p-acetoxybenzoic acid was investigated by optical and electron microscopy, wide angle X-ray, and thermal analysis. The results of optical (LM) and electron microscopy (TEM and STEM) suggest the existence of ordered domains which appear as large lamellar thickness (∼200 Å) as has been described earlier for single crystals of the pure hompolymer of p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHBA). However, the characteristic reversible endotherm at 330-360°C for PHBA could not be obtained. In isolated cases, the lamellar blocks retained their general dimensions up to 535°C whereas the surrounding matrix had degraded severely. An irreversible endotherm was observed at 303°C which suggested the presence of a higher degree of order than expected for a random copolymer. The irreversible nature of the endotherm is consistent with a transition from a semicrystalline structure to a liquid crystalline state. X-ray analysis with as received samples and thermally treated specimen provided additional support for more ordered regions.

Notes: Reactivity ratios have been determined for the copolymerization of trimethyl aconitate with butadiene, styrene, acrylonitrile, and vinyl chloride, and for triethyl aconitate with butadiene and styrene. The values obtained indicate that trialkyl aconitates are very reactive in free radical initiated copolymerizations. No copolymerizations of aconitic acid were realized. A copolymer of butadiene and trimethyl aconitate has been prepared in a modified Mutual recipe at 50°C. The copolymer shows fair oil resistance and tensile properties but the low-temperature properties are poor. The temperature rise of trimethyl aconitate copolymer is possibly better than that of standard GR-S made at 50°C.
