Notizen: The dynamic mechanical properties of titanium dioxide-filled poly(vinyl acetate) have been studied at filler concentrations of 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 wt.-% TiO2 by using a torsional pendulum. The damping factor was found to increase with higher temperatures. At 40°C., the damping factors for the different TiO2 concentrations were estimated to be the same. Damping factors above 40°C. were difficult to obtain due to the rubbery nature of the TiO2-poly(vinyl acetate) systems. From 24 to 35°C., 10 wt.-% TiO2-poly(vinyl acetate) was closer in damping factor increase to unfilled poly(vinyl acetate) than to the higher TiO2-content polymers. At all temperatures, damping factors decreased with higher TiO2 concentration. As the temperature decreased to 0°C., damping factors for the filled systems approached a common value. Potential energy of filled systems as indicated by shear modulus values is increased by higher TiO2 concentrations and lower temperature. Kinetic energy for the filled systems, as shown by the out-of-phase modulus, is actually increased by larger filler concentration and higher temperature. A model is proposed where introduction of TiO2 filler acts to increase general long-range polymer chain stiffening and at the same time enables short-range chain mobility to rise, possibly through greater side-chain motion.

Notizen: The stress-strain properties of TiO2-filled poly(vinyl acetate) have been studied at filler percentages of 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40% TiO2 over a strain-rate range of 100-5000%/ min at 24°C. Tensile strength, Young's modulus, and offset yield strengths all were found to increase with higher strain rates and higher TiO2 contents. Ultimate elongations decreased with greater TiO2 content and higher strain rates. Shift factors for volume fraction of filler were estimated for tensile properties as function of test rate. Stress relaxation studies have shown a reduction in relaxation times with increasing TiO2 content. Calculations of the out-of-phase Young's modulus were made as a function of filler content employing a box-type of distribution of relaxation times. A possible explanation for the stress-strain behavior observed is that introduction of TiO2 changes the internal viscosity of the system, similar to the effect of temperature. This would also mean that the ultimate properties would be dependent on filler content and strain rate because viscous resistance to chain deformation would be altered. The effect of filler on stress relaxation could be thought of being due to an increase in short-range chain motion.

Notizen: The tensile properties of TiO2-filled poly(vinyl acetate) were studied at strain rates of 100%/min. to 5,000%/min. at 25°C. after exposure to relative humidities of 10, 25, 51, 70, and 90% for 160 hr. Filler concentrations studied were 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 wt.-% TiO2. The change in tensile properties with greater humidity was dependent on filler content. As the filler content increased, strength was lowered, elongation increased, and stiffness decreased with greater humidity. Generally, changes in tensile properties with humidity were less pronounced at higher strain rates. A mechanism is proposed where H2O alters the packing of polymer chains and affects the interaction of filler with polymer.

Notizen: Dynamic mechanical measurements were made with a torsional pendulum of a TiO2- filled epoxy polymer (crosslinked with hexamethylene diamine) over a temperature range from 20-90°C., at filler concentrations of 0-40 wt.-%. The second-order transition temperature (Tg) was raised as the filler content increased. The behavior of TiO2 filler results in a long-range immobilization of the highly crosslinked system with resultant increases in shear modulus (higher G′) as well as decreased capacity for energy dissipation (lower damping factor). The out-of-phase modulus (G″) increased with filler content as well. The magnitudes of the slope parameters Hr (representing G′ data above Tg) and Hg (representing G′ data below Tg) decreased with greater filler content. The possibility is set forth that the TiO2 filler causes a different distribution of mobility around the nitrogen junction as well as a change in the effective number of CH2 units between crosslinks.

Notizen: The tensile and dynamic mechanical properties of poly(norbornene), prepared through ring-opening polymerization, were studied. Tensile strength and extensibility increased, while Young's modulus decreased with increasing molecular weight and with increasing content of trans relative to cis unsaturation. The damping factor Delta; was dependent on molecular weight only for the lower molecular weight samples. The out-of-phase modulus E″ and the damping factor decreased as the trans/cis ratio increased.
