    Notes: Equilibrium pressure-volume-temperature behavior in both the solid and molten regions was determine for nylon 610. Data were measured with a compressibility device capable of obtaining precise and accurate data. Residual curve treatment showed that the data were true equilibrium data. A volume extrapolated to 2419 atm. at room temperature from the present data compared favorably to the sole literature value reported by Bridgman. The data of this work showed the existence of what appears to be a second-order transition point for nylon 610. This point ranged from 140°C. at 232 atm. to about 170°C. at 1855 atm. The Spencer-Gilmore equation was fitted to the data of this study.

    Notes: The interfacial polycondensation of nylon 610 in unstirred, continuous, cascade systems has been studied. It was found that yields increased with increased reactant flow rates. The increase was shown to result from improved mass transport due to the change from molecular diffusion at low flow rates to eddy diffusion at high flow rates. The effect of improved mass transfer was also shown in the behavior of plots of polymer intrinsic viscosity versus sebacoyl chloride concentration.

    Notes: The adsorption of sodium dodecyl sulfate on polystyrene-styrene interfaces has been studied. Polystyrene interfaces of 20 and 60% were considered. Initial surfactant concentrations used in the study were 0.0004, 0.0008, and 0.004 mole/l. Two temperature levels, 25 and 75°C., were studied. Results showed no effect of initial surfactant concentration for a 20% interface at 25°C. However, the data for the 60% interface at 25°C. showed an effect of initial surfactant concentration. The apparent anomaly in the results regarding effect of initial surfactant concentration was explained in terms of the behavior of polystyrene-styrene as a mixed absorbent and the work of Harkins and co-workers, which showed that surfactant adsorption was a function of initial surfactant concentration over certain concentration ranges. Rate of surfactant adsorption appeared to be a function of surfactant adsorption raised to a power. The order of the adsorption appeared to be first-order for the 20% interface and second-order for the 60% interface.

    Notes: General correlations were developed to estimte polymer thermal conductivities for four cases - amorphous polymers above the glass temperature; amorphous polymers below the glass temperature; semicrystalline polymers above the melting temperature, and semicrystalline polymers below the melting temperature. The correlations based on readily available parameters (mer weights, densities at 25°C, specific heats) yielded calculated thermal conductivities that deviated by only 1%-2% from experimental values.

    Notes: The interfacial polycondensations of nylon 66 in a continuous reaction system have been studied. An experimental stirred flow reactor was used to determine both yield and intrinsic viscosity (molecular weight) as functions of reactant ratio (adipoyl chloride/hexamethylene-diamine), and Reynolds number from laminar to turbulent flow. It was found that mass transfer was the controlling factor in the reaction system. The yield as a function of Reynolds number was found to directly correlate with the behavior of the combination of mass transfer coefficient and interfacial area. Intrinsic viscosity had maximum values in the same reactant ratio range as for batch and continuous cascade systems studied earlier. Intrinsic viscosity behavior was shown to relate to interfacial area behavior.

    Notes: The effect of acid acceptor level (sodium hydroxide) in the interfacial polycondensation of nylon 610 has been studied. It was found that increased acceptor levels shifted the curves of intrinsic viscosity versus sebacoyl chloride concentration to the right. It was also found that peak intrinsic viscosity values first decreased and then increased with increasing acid acceptor levels. The experimental results were shown to relate to balance of reactants and character of polycondensation zone.

    Notes: Specific heats for poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(diethylaminoethyl methacrylate), poly(cyclohexyl methacrylate), poly(allyl methacrylate), and poly(ethyl acrylate) were measured from 120 to 300°C. with a drop calorimeter. It was found that existing solid-state theories and equations were unable to correlate the data. The reason advanced was that such theories were developed for crystalline materials, which differed greatly from the amorphous polymers of the present work. A more successful approach was to use a correlation technique originally developed for organic liquids.

    Notes: The present investigation considered the transfer of mass during fiber formation with the dry spinning process, both experimentally and theoretically. Experimental data taken for the dry spinning of poly(methyl methacrylate)-benzene solutions were treated with the equation of continuity of species. Two solutions of this equation were applied to the data. The first, an analytical solution with a number of restraints and assumptions, yielded good, semiquantitative results. The other solution determined by numerical analysis with fewer restraints yielded calculated data which predicted exactly the behavior of average fiber solvent concentration.

The equation yielded calculated pressure-volume-temperature data that deviated by 1% or less from experimentally determined data. The use of the equation requires only that the polymer's glass temperature and density at 25°C and 1 atm be known. Polymer glass temperatures can also be estimated with the equation.
