Notes: A series of macroporous glycidyl methacrylate-ethylene dimethacrylate copolymers have been prepared by the suspension polymerization according to a statistical design of experimental approach in which concentration of ethylene dimethacrylate and time needed for raising the polymerization temperature from 20 to 70°C have been varied. The porous properties of hydrolyzed copolymers have been characterized by means of size exclusion chromatography using polystyrene standards in tetrahydrofuran. Pore volume, specific surface area, and pore size are affected by the crosslinking agent concentration rather than by the rate of temperature increase during the polymerization reaction.

Notes: The effect of the concentration of crosslinking agent, of the amount and composition of inert components and of the concentration of initiator on the process of radical copolymerization of glycidylmethacrylate with ethylenedimethacrylate modelling the situation arising in suspension polymerization has been studied. It was found, that the rate of polymerization decreases with increasing concentration of the crosslinking agent in the mixture, which also brings about extension of the time after which the reaction mixture becomes turbid. Causes underlying these phenomena are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Bei der Copolymerisation von Glycidylmethacrylat mit Ethylenglykoldimethacrylat wurden folgende Parameter variiert: Die Konzentration von Inertkomponente, Vernetzer, Initiator, die thermodynamische Qualität der Inertkomponenten sowie die Polymerisationstemperatur.
Notes: By the method of design of experiments it was investigated the effect of some components of polymerization feed as the content of inert components, crosslinking agent, initiator, thermodynamic quality of inert components and polymerization temperature on the specific surface area of the produced sorbents which were copolymers from glycidylmethacrylate and ethylenedimethacrylate. By varying the five parameters given above, it was possible to control the specific surface area within the range 0-460 m2 g-1.

Notes: The effects of inert solvent concentration of crosslinking agent and initiator and polymerization temperature on specific surface area, porosity, penetration modulus, stress at break, and inner and surface morphology of the copolymer glycidyl methacrylate-ethylene dimethacrylate were investigated. There is a direct influence of interfacial tension between the continuous and dispersed phases in suspension at the beginning of polymerization on the morphology of the bead, and hence on the resulting physical characteristics of the structure.

Notes: Sorbents based on glycidyl methacrylate were used in an investigation of the effect of the type of the suspension stabilizer and of its concentration on the shape, size, and morphology of beads consisting of submicroscopic particles (globules). Of many stabilizers used, only poly(vinyl pyrro-lidone) and poly(vinyl alcohol) led to the formation of regular spherical beads with a surface shell. As expected, beads obtained using a stabilizer producing higher interfacial tension poly(vinyl pyrrolidone)-K 90 were much larger. A similar effect may be reached by lowering the concentration of poly(vinyl alcohol), if this lowering is accompanied by a rise in the interfacial tension. Despite this, however, the surface shell was not compact in this relatively narrow range of interfacial ten-sions.

Notes: Three types of chemically different macroporous copolymers were investigated with respect to the possibility of their application as potential drug sorbents in blood detoxication and compared with activated charcoal which is used for this purpose in most cases. The measurements with a model drug solution were carried out in a dynamic arrangement under conditions resembling haemoperfusion. The effect of particle size of the sorbent on the rate of sorption and actual capacity of the column was detected and elucidated.

Notes: New iodine-containing polymeric hydrogel particles were prepared by suspension radical copolymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), 3-(methacryloylamidoacetamido)-2,4,6-triiodobenzoic acid (MABA) and ethylene dimethacrylate (EDMA) in an aqueous medium using azobisisobutyronitrile as an initiator and magnesium hydroxide as a suspension stabilizer. To impart porosity to the product, cyclohexanol and 1-dodecanol were added as inert diluents to the polymerization mixture. Particles containing 27 wt % iodine produced radiopacity sufficient to observe a clearly visible X-ray image. The equilibrium swelling behavior of the particles in water was characterized. Swelling of the particles dramatically increased by converting the acid groups of MABA into their Na+ form. The more MABA the copolymer particle contain, the higher is their swelling in the Na+ form. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Various methods are reviewed that have been developed in recent years to produce uniform polymer beads with diameter larger than 1 μm. Methods such as emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization, suspension polymerization (including non-standard polymerization devices and a method of activated swelling), dispersion polymerization, precipitation polymerization, and other techniques are covered. The discussion focuses on the mechanism of bead formation and variables influencing the properties of the beads. Potential applications of monosized beads in both industry and research are described.
