    Notes: 1,5-Dioxo-1-methyl-4-azaphosphepane was synthesized and polymeized in the presence of water, stannic chloride, or phosphoric acid. Polymers obtained by using these catalysts were shown to have lower molecular weights than nylon 6 samples prepared under identical reaction conditions. Thermal and other physical properties of the phosphorus-containing polyamide are reported and compared with those of nylon 6.

    Notes: Syntheses and reactions of 4-carboxy-2-pyrrolidone, 6,6-dimethyl-4-carboxy-2-piperidone, and 5,5-dimethyl-4-carboxy-2-pyrrolidone are described. Whereas 4-carboxy-2-pyrrolidone polymerizes upon heating to form a polyimide, the two lactams containing geminal dimethyl groups undergo isomerization. The 6,6-dimethyl-4-carboxy-2-piperidone isomerizes to 5,5-dimethyl-3-carboxymethyl-2-pyrrolidone, and 5,5-dimethyl-4-carboxy-2-pyrrolidone affords isopropylidene succinimide. Possible mechanisms for these reactions are discussed.

    Notes: Synthesis and reactions of 4-carboxy-6-alkyl-2-piperidones and 4-carboxyl-6-alkyl-2-pyrrolidones are described. Upon heating, the substituted 4-carboxy-2-piperidones underwent both polymerization to polysuccinimides and isomerization to pyrrolidone derivatives. No polymerization but isomerization to ethylidene succinimide was observed upon heating the substituted 4-carboxy-2-pyrrolidone. Both polymerization and isomerization can be explained by mechanisms discussed previously.
