Notes: The diffusion coefficients (D) of nitroglycerine (NG) migration through cured non-halo and halo polyesters have been calculated with the help of M∞ determined experimentally and Fick's Law. The calculated NG migrations at different time intervals compare very closely with the corresponding NG migrations determined experimentally. The concentration profiles at various locations in thin sheets of non-halo and halo polyesters have also been calculated.

Notes: Unsaturated halo and nonhalo polyesters, based on tetrachlorophthalic anhydride, tetrabromophthalic anhydride, and phthalic anhydride with diethylene glycol and maleic anhydride, have been synthesized, using a “2-step” polyesterification process. These were mixed with 35% styrene monomer and 0.02% hydroquinone. The structural aspects of halo and nonhalo polyesters have been studied by IR and NMR. Further, these polyesters have been characterized for various properties. A comparison of various properties suggests that tensile strength, bond strength, heat resistance, flame retardance, gel time, and oxygen index follow the order as BP-35 〉 CP-35 〉 NHP-35, whereas the order for other properties, such as exotherm peak temperature, thermal conductivity, % elongation, and nitroglycerine absorption, is BP-35 〈 CP-35 〈 NHP-35. Variation in the properties of cured halo and nonhalo polyesters has been discussed in terms of structural considerations. The nature of P-t profile of inhibited double-base (DB) rocket propellants on static evaluation suggests that CP-35 is a potential inhibitor for DB propellants. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Seven unsaturated chloropolyesters based on tetrachlorophthalic anhydride (TCPAn) maleic anhydride (MAn), and propylene glycol (PG) (designated as CP-1) and TCPAn, MAn, and polyethylene glycol molecular weight 200 (PEG-200) (designated as CP-2), and TCPAn, MAn, and mixed glycols (PG & PEG-200 in different molar proportions) and designated as CPM-2, CPM-4, CPM-6, etc. (depending upon molar proportions) have been synthesized. The flameretardant characteristics have been assigned by measuring heat resistance (loss in weight) and flame retardance (burning rate), and it is found that in these chloropolyesters thermal stability increases as chlorine percentage increases. In addition, these chloropolyesters have been characterized for gel time, exotherm peak temperature, tensile strength, percentage elongation and bond strength, nitroglycerine absorption, and cross-link density. Based on these properties, CPM-9 with 30% styrene (designated as CPM-9s) has been selected for inhibition and static evaluation trials, after conditioning at ambient, cold (-40°C), and hot (+50°C) temperatures. The nature of pressure-time profiles indicate the suitability of “CPM-9s” for the inhibition of double-base (containing 2-NDPA) propellants.

Notes: The use of unsaturated polyesters for inhibition of double-base rocket propellants has become popular in recent years. A direct bonding inhibition system termed as semiflexible unsaturated polyester resin-4 has been recently developed and reported by us. It has been reported in literature that the use of some fillers such as antimony trioxide, titanium dioxide, lithophone, alumina trihydrate etc. impart better mechanical and heat resistance properties. The effect of 10% to 60% of alumina trihydrate (Al2O3 · 3 H2O) on semiflexible unsaturated polyester resin-4 in respect of gel time, exotherm peak temperature, tensile strength, %-elongation, nitroglycerin absorption, water absorption, heat resistance and flame retardance has been studied and the result obtained have been discussed. It is observed that 30% of alumina trihydrate imparts desirable properties. The 108 mm and 148 mm-diameter propellant sustainers inhibited with resin-4 containing 30% alumina trihydrate and conditioned at ambient, sub-zero temperature (-40°C for 18 hr) and high temperature (+50°C for 18 hr) were statically evaluated. The pressure-time profiles at all temperatures have been found to be flat and neutral which infer that the inhibition system works satisfactorily.
