Notes: A general theory of scattering by polymer solutions has been proposed recently. This theory uses as a parameter the excluded volume v between segments belonging to different chains. In this paper we discuss the effect of polymer concentration on v. As a first approximation one recovers the Flory expression for the free energy. As a second approximation one obtains an expression for v or χ as function of the polymer concentration. There is good agreement between theory and experiment for poor solvents and a volume fraction of polymer less than 0.25.

Notes: The static and dynamic scattering properties of multicomponent polymer mixtures are examined starting from the theoretical formalism based on the random phase approximation (RPA) for multicomponent polymer mixtures in the presence of a low molecular weight solvent. The results are compared with the light scattering data reported recently by Strazielle and coworkers [1] for polystyrene/polydimethylsiloxane/polymethylmethacrylate/toluene mixtures. The present paper is an extension of the work published recently by these authors [2] and considers data obtained from several concentrations of PMMA. It also includes a discussion of the dynamic properties which are obtained by quasi-elastic light scattering.

Notes: Kinetic deviations with the conversion observed in free-radical-initiated [acrylonitrile (A)-styrene (S)] copolymerization carried out in DMF solution have been interpreted in terms of preferential solvation of the polymer by one of the monomers or the solvent. First it is well established that the initial styrene content of the PAS copolymer increases if a slight amount of polymer is introduced before the beginning of polymerization. Next the preferential solvation has been studied and characterized in various solvents (toluene or DMF) from the results of differential refractometry at dialysis equilibrium of the ternary solution (solvent-monomer-polymer) versus its solvent mixture. It was found that the most polar monomer, acrylonitrile, is already adsorbed by the polymer, mostly in copolymerizations carried out in DMF, from initially rich acrylonitrile mixtures. It is suggested that this phenomenon implies a heterogeneous repartition of the monomer mixture in the solution, which may affect the kinetic copolymerization when the conversion increases.
