Abstract A system is described which utilises video games to encourage rehabilitation of standing balance following traumatic disruption of this ability. By transference of body weight both between the feet and in the fore-and-aft direction, a patient can correspondingly move a cross on a video screen. Specific targets for the cross can be selected by a physiotherapist, these chosen to exercise facets of balance. The video games thus generated provide biofeedback information and raise the motivational level for the patient, enable very specific training objectives to be defined, and provide a monitor of progress for the therapist.
