    Notes: Abstract  Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for grain quality, yield components and other traits were investigated in two Sorghum caudatum×guinea recombinant inbred line (RIL) populations. A total of 16 traits were evaluated (plant height, panicle length, panicle compactness, number of kernels/panicle, thousand-kernel weight, kernel weight/panicle, threshing percentage, dehulling yield, kernel flouriness, kernel friability, kernel hardness, amylose content, protein content, lipid content, germination rate and molds during germination and after harvest) and related to two 113- and 100-point base genetic maps using simple (SIM) and composite (CIM) interval mapping. The number, effects and relative position of QTLs detected in both populations were generally in agreement with the distributions, heritabilities and correlations among traits. Several chromosomal segments markedly affected multiple traits and were suspected of harbouring major genes. The positions of these QTLs are discussed in relation to previously reported studies on sorghum and other grasses. Many QTLs, depending on their relative effects and position, could be used as targets for marker-assisted selection and provide an opportunity for accelerating breeding programmes.

    Notes: Abstract The miscibility of phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylcholine, and cholesterol in monolayers were studied. The influence of sodium and calcium ions in this system was determined. The compression isotherms of mixed monolayers of the above cited three components spread on subphases containing opiate molecules are elucidated. Moreover, the penetration kinetics of opiate molecules in these mixed monolayers was also recorded. The results show that the presence of cholesterol always lowers the penetration of opioid molecules; this effect is weaken for meperidine, the most hydrophobic of the molecules assayed.

    Notes: Abstract  The surface activity of HAV-VP3(110–121) peptide was studied at different concentrations in an aqueous solution. Saturation was reached at 0.62 μM concentration. The ability of the peptide to insert into monolayers of CL, SA, DPPC, DPPC/5% CL and DPPC/5% SA was also performed. Mixed mono-layers composed of this peptide and the lipid mixtures were also studied as far as the miscibility of the two components is concerned. The mixed monolayers showing small negative deviations from ideality. The values of excess free energy of mixing (ΔG E M) suggest that the energy associated to the miscibility process is almost non-significant except for a 0.2 molar fraction of DPPC/SA and 0.6 molar fraction of DPPC/CL. The peptide has an expanding effect upon the monolayers but due to its amphoteric character this interaction is not dependent on the electrical charge of the lipids. In fluorescence studies, the peptide showed some degree of interaction with the lipid polar heads, but no interactions were detected with its alkylchains. This results show that after incubation with DPPC/5% CL and DPPC/5% SA liposomes the peptide remains in the outer part of the bilayers.

    Notes: Abstract The interaction between opiate molecules and phosphatidylserine (PS) or phosphatidylcholine (PC) has been studied on compression isotherms and penetration kinetics. Phosphatidylcholine-opiate interactions are weak and similar in magnitude for all opiate molecules. On contrary, PS and PS/PC interact strongly and differently with opiate molecules. The differences in penetration are not directly related to the pKa or hydrophobicity of the molecules.
