Notes: Abstract Nonlinear autonomous dynamical systems with ahomoclinic tangency to a periodic orbit are investigated. We study the bifurcation sequences of the mixed-mode oscillations generated by the homoclinicity, which are shown to belong to two different types, depending on the nature of the Liapunov numbers of the basic periodic orbit. A detailed numerical analysis is carried out to show how the existence of a tangent homoclinic orbit allows us to understand in a quantitative way a particular and regular sequence of cool flame-ignition oscillations observed in a thermokinetic model of hydrocarbon oxidation. Chaotic cool flame oscillations are also observed in the same model. When the control parameter crosses a critical value, this chaotic set of trajectories becomes globally unstable and forms a Cantor-like hyperbolic repellor, and the ignition mechanism generates ahomoclinic tangency to the Cantor set of trajectories. The complex bifurcation diagram may be globally reconstructed from a one-dimensional dynamical system, thanks to the strong contractivity of thermokinetics. It is found that a symbolic dynamics with three symbols is necessary to classify the periodic windows of the complex bifurcation sequence observed numerically in this system.

Notes: Abstract  A study investigating the contents of 13 trace elements and the correlations between these trace elements and soil parameters of the surface soils in the eastern alluvial plains of China is summarized and discussed in this paper. The results show that the contents of some elements studied differ from region to region. Close relations have been noted between all the trace element contents in the soils of the eastern alluvial plains and the relevant surface materials of erosion regions, which demonstrate the effects of parent materials, while climatic conditions and human interventions are also found to be important factors. Close relations were found between the transition elements of the Quaternary period and the chalcophile elements (except Cu). The chemical and geochemical properties of these elements are identified as beeing important inherent characteristics that affect the relations of these elements in the soils.

Notes: Abstract Linear and nonlinear optical effects have been studied in chromophore-doped gel hosts. Tetra-4-sulfonatophenylporphyrinatocopper(II) (CuTPPS),and1, 3-dihydro-1,3,3-trimethylspiro[2H-indole-2, 3′-[3H]-naphth[2,1-b][1,4]oxazine] (SP spirooxazine) species were entrapped within porous aluminosilicate hosts.Optical limiting effects and radiative up-conversion behavior in the CuTPPS-doped materials are described, and a six-level model is proposed based on experimental findings. Spirooxazine-containing specimens exhibiting photochromic effects were prepared, and cw and time-resolved spectroscopy methods are used to assess excited state band structures and the nature of guest-host interactions in the resultant gels.
