    Notes: Abstract We identified 161 Gram-negative bacterial strains isolated from the root surface of wheat grown under different soil conditions. The strains were divided into seven groups based on major morphological and physiological properties. Taxonomic allocation of the groups was verified by guanine+cytosine contents of DNA. Except for one group, which may be assumed to include bacteria belonging to the genera Flavobacterium and Cytophaga, the various groups were taxonomically united. The distribution of the groups changed with soil improvement. Pseudomonads predominated in unimproved soil, but Flavobacterium and Cytophaga spp. were predominant in the most improved soil. As all the strains were non-fermentative by Hugh and Leifson's test, API 20NE identification was applied. However, many strains were misidentified by this system, especially in the Flavobacterium and Cytophaga spp. group. For ecological studies, the strains were classified to species level by the API 20 NE system and by the results of a combination of guanine+cytosine (mol%) and isoprenoid quinone data. The pattern of distribution of the bacteria on the root surface of wheat varied at species level within one genus depending on soil conditions.

    Notes: Abstract Non-photochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence (qN) and its three components (qNf, qNm, and qNs) in the flag leaves of wheat grown in the field were studied by a fluorometer PAM-2000 on clear days. The diurnal variation patterns of qN in just fully extended (JFEL) and aging leaves (AL) were similar, but qNm declined markedly in JFEL while it remained at a relatively high level in AL under strong sunlight at noon. Furthermore, at midday qNf was higher than qNs in JFEL, but much lower in AL. The results show the relative contributions of different mechanisms in preventing the photosynthetic apparatus from photodamage change during leaf development.

    Notes: Abstract A function mapping from ℛn toℛ is called an SC1-function if it is differentiable and its derivative is semismooth. A convex SC1-minimization problem is a convex minimization problem with an SC1-objective function and linear constraints. Applications of such minimization problems include stochastic quadratic programming and minimax problems. In this paper, we present a globally and superlinearly convergent trust-region algorithm for solving such a problem. Numerical examples are given on the application of this algorithm to stochastic quadratic programs.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, we discuss the convergence properties of a class of descent algorithms for minimizing a continuously differentiable function f on R n without assuming that the sequence { x k } of iterates is bounded. Under mild conditions, we prove that the limit infimum of $$\left\| { \nabla f(x_k )} \right\|$$ is zero and that false convergence does not occur when f is convex. Furthermore, we discuss the convergence rate of { $$\left\| { x_k } \right\|$$ } and { f(x k )} when { x k } is unbounded and { f(x k )} is bounded.
