Notes: Summary Fifty three subjects (31 normal volunteers and 22 patients with asthma) between the ages of 20 and 87 years had their theophylline clearance measured. Volume of distribution (V) and terminal elimination half-life (t1/2) were also calculated in the volunteers who received i.v. theophylline. Although patients tended to have higher clearance values than volunteers, in both groups the oldest third had the lowest clearances. For the combined group (corrected for the patient effect) the oldest third (mean age 70 years) had a mean clearance of 0.53 versus 0.72 for the middle third (mean age 47 years) and 0.73 ml/min/kg CBW for the youngest third (mean age 26 years). There was no statistically significant age related change in V/kg CBW but t1/2 did rise with increasing age. Thus, although clearance does not fall with increasing age during younger adult life, there is a fall during late adult life becoming apparent in the seventh, eighth and ninth decades.

Notes: Summary The pharmacokinetics of two slow release theophylline preparations “Theo-Dur” (T) containing theophylline only and “Phyllocontin” (P) containing aminophylline have been compared in 12 patients with asthma. Each patient received both treatments in random order. The dose of treatment administered 12 hourly was increased or decreased to produce plasma theophylline concentrations of 10–20 mg/l at clinic visits normally 7 to 8 h after dosing. Pharmacokinetic studies were carried out after at least one week's treatment with this dose. After the first study day patients were crossed over to the second treatment at a dosage providing a similar amount of theophylline. They returned for a second study day after at least one week. Comparison of the dose corrected AUC, time to peak concentrations, within patient coefficients of variation (CV), number of concentration time points falling within 25% of Cmax and percentage fluctuations in plasma concentration showed no significant differences between the two preparations.

Notes: Abstract Four relatively rare, two common rotifers and one rotifer new to science are described from some coastal lakes near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Each rotifer is described in detail, and several are accompanied by illustrations and mensuration data. Geographic distribution and individual habitats of the rotifers are also discussed. Several species show a larger geographic distribution than previously known.

Notes: Abstract The author gives account of rotifers found at ten locations in the Republic of Korea, and elaborates some detail of specimens encountered with remarks and drawings. Thirty-seven different rotifer species were found, mostly belonging to the Order Monogononta. Twenty-two are new to the species list compiled by Yamamoto (1953). Keratella hiemalis was found for the first time in Asia. To date, one-hundred and two species of rotifers have been found in Korea.

Notes: Abstract A new rotifer is described from among samples taken from coastal lakes in southeastern Brazil. Comparisons to related rotifers are made. This new animal belongs to the Hexarthra mira-intermedia species group by way of its general morphological configuration, the number of teeth in the trophi (5), and the two club-shaped caudal appendages (CSCA's). An extremely long dorsal antenna and very long setae extending from the bend in the ventro-lateral arm characterize this animal's speciation.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the Hilbert-space analogue of a result of Huang, that all the methods in the Huang class generate the same sequence of points when applied to a quadratic functional with exact linear searches, is established. The convergence of a class of direct prediction methods based on some work of Dixon is then proved, and these methods are then applied to some control problems. Their performance is found to be comparable with methods involving exact linear searches.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the convergence of variable-metric methods without line searches (direct prediction methods) applied to quadratic functionals on a Hilbert space is established. The methods are then applied to certain control problems with both free endpoints and fixed endpoints. Computational results are reported and compared with earlier results. The methods discussed here are found to compare favorably with earlier methods involving line searches and with other direct prediction quasi-Newton methods.

Notes: Abstract This paper is concerned with some of the most powerful methods of minimizing functionals on Hilbert space. It is established that certain classes of these methods are equivalent and their convergence is proved for certain nonquadratic functionals on a Hilbert space. A computational study of these methods applied to a control problem is also included with particular reference to the equivalence of methods mentioned above.
