Notes: The dynamics of a fragmentation model is examined from the point of view of numerical simulation and rate equations. The model includes effects of temperature. The number n(s,t) of fragments of size s at time t is obtained and is found to obey the scaling form n(s,t)∼ s−τtwsγe−ρtf(s/tz) where f(x) is a crossover function satisfying f(x)(approximately-equal-to)1 for x(very-much-less-than)1 and f(x)(very-much-less-than)1 for x(very-much-greater-than)1. The dependence of the critical exponents τ, w, γ, and z on space dimensionality d is studied from d=1 to 5. The result of the dynamics on fractal and nonfractal objects as well as on square and triangular lattices is also examined.

Notes: The article searches for the possible presence of determinism in heart rate variability (HRV) signals by using a new approach based on NARMA (nonlinear autoregressive moving average) modeling and free-run prediction. Thirty-three 256-point HRV time series obtained from Wistar rats submitted to different autonomic blockade protocols are considered, and a collection of surrogate data sets are generated from each one of them. These surrogate sequences are assumed to be nondeterministic and therefore they may not be predictable. The original HRV time series and related surrogates are submitted to NARMA modeling and prediction. Special attention has been paid to the problem of stationarity. The results consistently show that the surrogate data sets cannot be predicted better than the trivial predictor—the mean—while most of the HRV control sequences are predictable to a certain degree. This suggests that the normal HRV signals have a deterministic signature. The HRV time series derived from the autonomic blockade segments of the experimental protocols do not show the same predictability performance, albeit the physiological interpretation is not obvious. These results have important implications to the methodology of HRV analysis, indicating that techniques from nonlinear dynamics and deterministic chaos may be applied to elicit more information about the autonomic modulation of the cardiovascular activity. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The purpose of the present study was lo examine the phenotype of the cutaneous immunocompetent cells in lichen planus and chronic graft versus host (GVH) reaction infiltrates, by the use of monoclonal antibodies directed against T cell populations and Langerhans cells. Our results in lichen planus suggest an immunological reaction similar to the delayed hypersensitivity reaction, including all the immunocompetent cell sub-populations, with a first stage of antigenic information by Langerhans cells (OKT6 +, BL6 +, HLA-DR+) and helper cells, and a second stage mediated by suppressor/cytotoxic cells. The results from the study of GVH reaction also suggest an effect mediated by suppressor/cytotoxic cells (OKT3+, OKT4−, OK.T8+, HLA-DR+).Our results favour the existence of a lymphocytotoxic process in lichen planus and chronic GVH reaction.

Notes: One hundred twenty skin biopsies from patients with different skin diseases were found to be positive for C3 cutaneous staining by immunofluorescence study. By the direct immunofluorescence method, we looked for C1q and C4 and immunoglobulin deposits in all those biopsies. C1q and/or C4 were only found in dermatoses with a recognised humoral immunologic mechanism; in some eases C1q and/or C4 deposits were found in the absence of immunoglobulins. The results showed that identification of C1q and C4 is important in routine immunopathologic studies, and provide interesting data of diagnostic value.

Notes: Aims : Structural remodelling in acute and chronic idiopathic interstitial pneumonia (IIP) has been extensively investigated, but little attention has been directed to the elastic tissue in these situations. The aim of this study was to determine whether elastic deposition accompanies collagen deposition in the four major histological patterns of IIP: diffuse alveolar damage (DAD), organizing pneumonia (OP), non-specific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) and usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP).Methods and results : We measured, by image analysis, the content of fibres of the collagenous and elastic systems of the alveolar septum in histological slides of open lung biopsies, using the picrosirius-polarization method and Weigert's resorcin–fuchsin stain, respectively. Five groups were studied: 10 cases of DAD; nine cases of OP; nine cases of NSIP; and 10 cases of UIP. Four normal lungs were used for comparison. The content of collagen fibres was significantly higher in UIP when compared to DAD, NSIP, OP and normal lung. The content of elastic fibres was increased in comparison with normal lungs but this was not significantly different among the histological patterns. Conclusion : Acute and chronic IIP cause a similar increase in the collagen and elastic contents of the lungs, representing a process of ‘fibroelastosis’ rather than an exclusive process of fibrosis. A profibrogenic mechanism is responsible for the unparallelled collagen augmentation observed in UIP subjects, the nature of which is yet to be determined.

Notes: Using data from a triticale advanced line yield trial network, we attempt to define the zones, in Portugal, within which the joint regression can be established with enough accuracy and precision to be of practical value. The procedure comprises the following steps: adjustment of the joint regressions for the whole area; evaluation of the residuals in each trial; previous identification of geoclimatic zones; comparison of these zones with the residuals; adjustment of the regressions for the zones confirmed in the previous analysis, and testing the differences between the regressions for each zone. The experimental conditions allowed the differentiation of two main zones: “Nordeste Transmontano” and “Sul de Montejunto-Estrela”, however, another zone, included in the latter and designated “Alentejo Litoral e Algarve”, is suggested though further experimental data are needed for sound conclusions.

Notes: Immature fruits of soybean (Glycine max L. Merr. cv. Santa Rosa) were found to contain high ureide/amino acid ratios for plants dependent on atmospheric nitrogen (nodulated), but low ratios for plants cultivated on NO−3 (non-nodulated). The pod tissue was responsible for almost all this difference, which reflects the N metabolism of these plants (nodulated:urcide-based; NO−3 dependent: asparagine based). The capacity of fruit tissues to utilize ureides and asparagine via allantoinase (EC 3.5.2.5) and asparaginase (EC 3.5.1.1) was investigated during fruit development. Both enzymes were present in crude desalted extracts of all parts of the fruit analysed (pod, cotyledon and seed coat). Asparaginase was detected in pod tissue only at early stages and with very low activities, whereas high activities of allantoinase (up to 20 [imol pod−1 h−1) were present after this organ reached full expansion. The cotyledons contained most of the allantoinase and asparaginase activities of the seed, the highest activities being recorded during the period of rapid protein accumulation. There was little difference in the activity patterns for nodulated and NO−3-grown plants, despite the large difference in nitrogen nutrition of the fruits.

Notes: A high speed steel, processed by two powder metallurgy routes and heat treated to give a range of microstructures, was investigated in 4-point bending at room temperature using smooth and precracked specimens. The finer microstructures were in the material from gas atomised powder which was hot isostatically-pressed, commercial ASP60 alloy, while the coarser microstructures derived from laboratory vacuum sintering of water-atomised powder. The resultant hardness values Hv50 were in the rage 780 to 1050, prior autenite grain sizes, 5 to 25 pm and maximum carbide sizes, 6 to 32 μm.Only some of the uncracked samples exhibited macroscopic yielding, at stresses in the range 1.64 to 2.59 GPa; the finer microstructures being asSociated with the higher strengths. Macroscopic plastic deformation never exceeded 0.33%; fracture strengths were in the range 1.46 to 2.75 GPa. Fracture toughness, Klc, varied from 12 to 17 MPa√m in the Hy50 range 920 to 800 for the directly sintered steel and only from 10 to 12 MPa√m in ASP60. The insensitivity of K1c to macroscopic hardness in ASP60 is asSociated with the plastic zone size of 1.5 μm which approximates to the average carbide spacing.Nucleation and growth of natural, i.e. stress-induced, microcracks in un notched specimens was studied by surface replica microscopy. Crack nucleation took place at stresses between 0.5 and 1.5 GPa, i.e. below those for yielding and for fracture, σF, and was by debonding of inclusions (alumina and calcium-alumino silicates) or cracking of carbides. In the coarsest microstructure monotonic stepwise subcritical crack growth was observed from stress levels of ∼1.3 GPa, i.e. ∼0.8 to 0.9σF. Similarities to the behaviour of short fatigue cracks in metallic materials and the R-curve behaviour of ceramics are referred to.
