Abstract The surface properties of H3PW12O40 are initially dependent on pretreatment temperature as can be deduced from the ionization of adsorbed aromatic hydrocarbons. Not only does surface dehydration proceed at a lower temperature than bulk dehydration but also highly reactive species (ionized benzene) are generated by the loss of protons of polyanions in special locations such as corner or edge positions.
