Notizen: Abstract We investigate the effect of the ordering of the unknowns on the convergence of the preconditioned conjugate gradient method. We examine a wide range of ordering methods including nested dissection, minimum degree, and red-black and consider preconditionings without fill-in. We show empirically that there can be a significant difference in the number of iterations required by the conjugate gradient method and suggest reasons for this marked difference in performance. We also consider the effect of orderings when an incomplete factorization which allows some fill-in is performed. We consider the effect of automatically controlling the sparsity of the incomplete factorization through drop tolerances and level of fill-in.

Notizen: Abstract We present vectorizable versions of the block preconditioners introduced by Concus. Golub & Meurant [2] for use with the conjugate gradient method. In [2] it was shown that the block preconditioners give less computational work than the classical point ones on conventional serial computers. Here we give numerical results for various vector computers, CDC Cyber 205, CRAY 1-S, CRAY X-MP and for several problems, which show that for most cases the block method with slight modifications, gives better results also on vector computers.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper we consider algorithms to compute bounds of the A-norm of the error in the preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) algorithm. We extend to PCG formulas that were given in an earlier paper [8]. We give numerical experiments which show that good upper and lower bounds can be obtained provided estimates of the lowest and largest eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrix are given or adaptively computed.

Notizen: Abstract Linear systems with complex coefficients arise from various physical problems. Examples are the Helmholtz equation and Maxwell equations approximated by finite difference or finite element methods, that lead to large sparse linear systems. When the continuous problem is reduced to integral equations, after discretization, one obtains a dense linear system. The resulting matrices are generally non-Hermitian but, most of the time, symmetric and consequently the classical conjugate gradient method cannot be directly applied. Usually, these linear systems have to be solved with a large number of unknowns because, for instance, in electromagnetic scattering problems the mesh size must be related to the wave length of the incoming wave. The higher the frequency of the incoming wave, the smaller the mesh size must be. When one wants to solve 3D-problems, it is no longer practical to use direct method solvers, because of the huge memory they need. So iterative methods are attractive for this kind of problems, even though their convergence cannot be always guaranteed with theoretical results. In this paper we derive several methods from a unified framework and we numerically compare these algorithms on some test problems.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper we consider computing estimates of the norm of the error in the conjugate gradient (CG) algorithm. Formulas were given in a paper by Golub and Meurant (1997). Here, we first prove that these expressions are indeed upper and lower bounds for the A-norm of the error. Moreover, starting from these formulas, we investigate the computation of the l 2-norm of the error. Finally, we define an adaptive algorithm where the approximations of the extreme eigenvalues that are needed to obtain upper bounds are computed when running CG leading to an improvement of the upper bounds for the norm of the error. Numerical experiments show the effectiveness of this algorithm.
