Abstract This paper reports on some of the major research and development activities at the SMC into materials modelling of existing advanced high strength superalloys and the work in progress to understand the step change materials which will have to be introduced into future engines to meet the perceived performance requirements. These studies are aimed at developing appropriate lifing methodologies and ensuring safe service usage of these materials. Lifing models for dwell sensitive titanium alloys, powder metallurgy materials, single crystal alloys, metal matrix composites and intermetallic alloys are considered.
