Abstract An electrochemical analysis of surface-controlled metal oxidation is presented. The reduction of molecular oxygen adsorbed on the oxide surface is broken into a number of steps. The possible rate-determining steps are analyzed in turn and the resultant rate equations derived. It is predicted that an Nth-root growth law will occur with N varying continuously over a limited range. A similar result for the pressure dependence of the oxidation rate is obtained.
