Abstract In the quaternary water-in-oil CTAB/n-pentanol/n-hexane/water microemulsion the role of the cosurfactant has been extensively investigated by means of spectroscopic and conductometric techniques. A detailed description of the water and cosurfactant partition between the continuous and the dispersed phase has been obtained. A complete characterization at molecular level of the modifications induced in the aggregates by varying the cosurfactant amount in oil rich region of the microemulsion at different water content has also been achieved. The alcohol concentration surely has a twofold effect on the diffusion of the aggregates varying the viscosity of the medium and modifying the interfacial composition.
