Notes: Abstract A standardless quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis is developed that simultaneously estimates weight proportions of minerals in a bulk lot of a multiphase material (such as coal ash, cement, or rock)and the weight proportions of chemical oxides or elements in constituent minerals. The method is based on data from bulk chemical analysis (of major oxides or elements)and X-ray diffraction intensity measurements on several subsamples of the bulk lot. Chemical analyses yield a matrix Yof weight proportions of major oxides (or elements)in subsamples. X-ray intensity measurements for minerals in subsamples form a matrix Q.The procedure is basically a factor analysis of Yinvolving a target transformation using Qas a target.
