Abstract CO hydrogenation has been studied over reduced Pd/NaY; a pronounced structure sensitivity was observed. Catalysts containing highly dispersed Pd clusters initially showed high selectivity towards CH4, but as the Pd particles grew during the reaction the selectivity changed towards CH3OH, CH3OCH3 and higher hydrocarbons. On catalysts initially containing large Pd particles, CH3OH and CH3OCH3 were selectively formed from the start of the reaction. The results suggest that dissociative adsorption of CO is favored on very small Pd clusters leading to CH4 formation. On larger Pd particles CH3OH is formed; it is subsequently converted to CH3OCH3 and higher hydrocarbons on acid sites.
