Notes: Summary The compound 2,4-hydroxy-5-chloro-acetophenone has been found to be a sensitive colorimetric reagent for iron(III) and uranyl(II) ions. The colour of the iron chelate is black while uranyl ion produces a characteristic brown-yellow colour in the neutral medium. The reagent is to be used in a 0.1 percent alcoholic solution which itself is pale yellow in colour.

Notes: Iron(III) forms in the aqueous medium a green complex with 8-hydroxy quinoline 7-sulfonic acid with maximum absorbence at 610 mμ, stable in the pH range 3-4. The composition of the complex as established by three different methods spectrophotometrically is Fe(III) EHQS (where EHQS is the abreviation used for 8-hydroxy quinoline 7-sulfonic acid). The stability constant calculated by the methods of BANERJI and DEY (1) and themole-ratio method (2) was found to be log K = 3.8 ± 0.05 at 25°C and the heat of formation was found to be = -5.24 k. cal/mole at 25°C.

Notes: Spectrophotometric study has been made with a view to investigate the composition and stability of the chelate formed between uranium(VI) and penta sodium salt of Methylthymol Blue (MTB). The composition of the red coloured chelate (λmax510 nm) as established by two different methods, comes out to 1:1 (metal:chelating agent). The chelate is stable between pH 6.2 and 6.9. The average value of log K at 30° (pH 6.7 ± 0.1; μ = 0.1 M) is 5.6 ± 0.2 and ΔG° at the same temperature is -7.7 ± 0.2 kcal/mole.

Notes: Dithio-oxamide (Rubeanic acid) has found application in the detection of Ni(II), Co(II) and Cu(II). In the present paper we have reported that the reagent also forms coloured chelates with potassium dichromate and zirconium salt, and hence have suggested the use of the reagent in inorganic colorimetric analysis.

Notes: Partition co-efficient of the chlorides and Nitrates of Nickel and Cobalt were studied and the average partition co-efficients have been determined. Effect of temperature, acids and ketones have also been investigated. The partition co-efficient increases with the increase in temperature in case of Nitrates while a reverse influence is seen in the case of the Chlorides. Acids have analogous effect to that of common ion and depress solubilities of Chlorides and Nitrates in water. Lower ketones like acetone, methyl ethyl ketone and acetonyl acetone appreciably decrease the partition co-efficient. The other Ketones did not show any appreciable partitioning effect.

Notes: The formation of a violet colour produced by the interaction of 1, 2, 5, 8 Tetrahydroxy anthraquinone (quinalizarin) and Lanthanum has been studied to determine the composition, stability and other characteristics of the chelate formed. The absorbance curves of the complex show maxima at 530 mμ. The composition of the chelate has been determined by three methods. The molar ratio of the metal to chelating agent is 1:2. The chelate is soluble in aqueous ethanol and is stable between pH 6.5-7.2. The maximum colour formation is attained at pH 6.8, when the mixture contains greater than five fold excess of the reagent with respect to the metal solution and the colour intensity remains unaltered even after keeping the mixture for three hours at room temperature. The stability constant of the chelate has been calculated by three different methods (a - c). The values of log K in 50% ethanolic medium at 30° are respectively a) 10.1 ± 0.1, b) 10.2 ± 0.1, c) 10.1 ± 0.1 and the free energies of formation at the same temperature are a) -14.0 ± 0.1, b) -14.1 ± 0.1, c) -14.0 ± 0.1 K.cal. The range of concentration for adherence to BEER's Law and value of optimum concentration range are 1.26 to 6.32 ppm and 1.4 to 3.5 ppm. Studies have also been made to establish optimum conditions for the spectrophotometric determination of Lanthanum.

Notes: Iron(III) forms in acidic aqueous medium green coloured complexes with 8-hydroxy quinoline-7-sulfonic acid (RI), 5-chloro-8-hydroxy quinoline-7-sulfonic acid (RII), 5-bromo-8-hydroxy quinoline-7-sulfonic acid (RIII) and 5-iodo-8-hydroxy quinoline-7-sulfonic acid (RIV). The composition of the complexes was studied by three different methods spectrophotometrically and the complexes were found to have the general formulae Fe(III)- R (where R stands for the ligand). The stability constants of the complexes, the free energy of formation, entropy and enthalpy changes and some analytical applications have been reported.
