Notizen: Helicon waves in a plasma confined by a cylinder are treated. The undamped normal modes of the helicon (H) and Trivelpiece–Gould (TG) waves have distinctly different wave patterns at high magnetic fields but at low fields have similar patterns and therefore interact strongly. Damping of these modes, their excitation by antennas, and the rf plasma absorption efficiency are considered. Nonuniform plasmas are treated by solving a fourth-order ordinary differential equation numerically. A significant difference between this and earlier codes which divide the plasma into uniform shells is made clear. Excitation of the weakly damped H wave, followed by conversion to the strongly damped TG wave which leads to high helicon discharge efficiency, is examined for realistic density profiles. A reason for the greater heating efficiency of the m=+1 vs the m=−1 mode for axially peaked profiles is provided. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Traveling- and standing-wave characteristics of the wave fields have been measured in a helicon discharge using a five-turn, balanced magnetic probe movable along the discharge axis z. Helical and plane-polarized antennas were used, and the magnitude and direction of the static magnetic field were varied, yielding three primary results. (1) As the density varies along z, the local wavelength agrees with the local dispersion relation. (2) Beats in the z variation of the wave intensity do not indicate standing waves, but instead are caused by the simultaneous excitation of two radial eigenmodes. Quantitative agreement with theory is obtained. (3) The damping rate of the helicon wave is consistent with theoretical predictions based on collisions alone. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The application of plasma physics to the manufacturing and processing of materials may be the new frontier of our discipline. Already partially ionized discharges are used in industry, and the performance of plasmas has a large commercial and technological impact. However, the science of low-temperature plasmas is not as well developed as that of high-temperature, collisionless plasmas. In this paper several major areas of application are described and examples of forefront problems in each are given. The underlying thesis is that gas discharges have evolved beyond a black art, and that intellectually challenging problems with elegant solutions can be found. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Components of the wave magnetic field in a helicon discharge have been measured with a single-turn, coaxial magnetic probe. Left- and right-handed helical antennas, as well as plane-polarized antennas, were used; and the results were compared with the field patterns computed for a nonuniform plasma. The results show that the right-hand circularly polarized mode is preferentially excited with all antennas, even those designed to excite the left-hand mode. For right-hand excitation, the radial amplitude profiles are in excellent agreement with computations. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The theory of helicon waves is extended to include finite electron mass. This introduces an additional branch to the dispersion relation that is essentially an electron cyclotron or Trivelpiece–Gould (TG) wave with a short radial wavelength. The effect of the TG wave is expected to be important only for low dc magnetic fields and long parallel wavelengths. The normal modes at low fields are mixtures of the TG wave and the usual helicon wave and depend on the nature of the boundaries. Computations show, however, that since the TG waves are damped near the surface of the plasma, the helicon wave at high fields is almost exactly the same as is found when the electron mass is neglected. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Because of their high density, low-pressure discharges ionized by helicon waves are being studied for their possible use in cluster tools for the fabrication of next-generation computer chips. How helicon waves are related to whistler waves and waves in a plasma-filled waveguide is explained, and the mystery of the high ionization efficiency is outlined. Experimental data on the waves and the equilibrium properties of the discharge are shown, and the status of our current understanding of the physical processes therein is summarized. The importance of kinetic effects and of a short-wavelength mode arising at low magnetic fields is evaluated. Applications of helicon discharges to such diverse fields as plasma accelerators, microwave generators, and tokamak physics are illustrated. Low-temperature plasma physics is often considered a discipline so different from high-temperature plasma physics that there is little overlap, but these studies show that the techniques developed in fusion and space plasma physics can be applied to technological plasmas as well. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A simple method for analyzing cylindrical Langmuir probe curves in a cold-ion plasma is described which yields the ion density in weakly collisional plasmas for which purely collisionless theories give erroneous results. The method is based on an extrapolation to the floating potential of the saturation ion current raised to the 4/3 power. This procedure is not supported by theory but apparently works because effects neglected in the theory tend to cancel. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
