Notes: SiO2 thin films prepared by rapid thermal oxidation (RTO) and in situ steam generation (ISSG) were characterized by infrared spectroscopy (IR) with gradient etching preparation and grazing incidence x-ray reflectometry. The IR spectra of the RTO films show a lower wave number shift as the film thickness decreases. On the other hand, the IR spectra of the ISSG film produced by the addition of 5% hydrogen did not show such large peak shifts. This means that the 5% hydrogen ISSG film has a very low concentration of lower wave number components that exhibit Si–O stretching mode. These are responsible for defect structures including dangling bonds and/or oxygen deficient defects near the SiO2/Si interface. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A photoluminescence study has been made on an oxygen-containing Si fine structure fabricated by a gas evaporation technique. Transmission electron micrographs have shown that the fine structure is composed of nonspherical particles aggregated together in chain-like or cluster-like structures. The luminescence from the samples after oxidation treatment is bright blue as viewed with the naked eye, the spectra having a peak at about 470 nm or shorter wavelength. A peculiar temperature dependence of the emission peak indicates that the emission is strongly correlated with some structural change in the fine structure.

Notes: A compact electron storage ring (JSR) is under construction in order to study accelerator technologies and to be used as the test ring aiming at a highly brilliant synchrotron radiation facility (6–8 GeV). The JSR lattice is a double-focusing achromatic type. The circumference is 20.5 m. However, even in this small ring, one straight section with a length of ∼1.5 m, where the dispersion is free, is provided for the insertion device study. The electron beam is supplied by the linac with an energy of 150 MeV, and the stored energy is slowly increased up to 300 MeV. Power supplies of all magnets and the rf system are controlled by a real-time computer through optical fiber links, and signals of beam monitors are stored in the same computer so that it is easy to test any type of control procedures.

Notes: Al2O3 films about 1000 A(ring) thick were deposited on polished Si(100) substrates by the reactive ionized cluster beam method. It was found that the index of refraction, the etch rate in HF, and the microstructure of the films could be controlled by varying substrate temperatures up to 600 °C and acceleration voltages between 0.25 and 3 kV.

Notes: The Seebeck coefficient, electrical resistivity, and thermal conductivity of La3−xAxS4 with the Th3P4-type structure (the γ-phase) for A=Ca, Ba, and x=0–0.8 have been measured as a function of alkaline earth metal content and temperature to determine the optimum dopant concentration and doping agent by calculating the corresponding figure of merit (Z). With an increase of x, the Seebeck coefficient and electrical resistivity increase, while the thermal conductivity decreases. The decrease of thermal conductivity is ascribed to the decrease of the electron concentration and the increase of the phonon scattering accompanying the substitution for La by an alkaline earth metal. As a result, La2.2Ca0.8S4 has a maximum value of Z of 2.3×10−4 °C−1 at 700 °C. We also have examined the long term stability of γ-La3−xAxS4. The substitution for La by alkaline earth metal of La3S4 stabilized the Th3P4-type structure at high temperature. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Recurrence of desmoid tumours is difficult to predict from only histological findings. In this study, immunohistochemistry for counting stromal blood vessels and proliferative activity, DNA flow cytometry, and interphase cytogenetic analysis of chromosome 8 by fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH) were performed to assess the correlation between their parameters and the recurrence of desmoid tumours.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods and results:The cases examined included 16 extra-abdominal desmoid and eight abdominal desmoids, comprising 14 recurrent and 10 non-recurrent cases. Eleven (69%) of the 16 extra-abdominal desmoids and three (38%) of the eight abdominal desmoids recurred. Patients with recurrent lesions (mean age, 20 years) were younger than those with non-recurrent tumours (34 years). Histologically, tumours with hypervascular areas frequently recurred after surgery in comparison with those with hypovascularity. There was no significant correlation between tumour size, the labelling index of the proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and the recurrence. In flow cytometric analysis, all the cases examined showed a diploid pattern. The FISH study revealed that the incidence of trisomy 8 was significantly higher in the recurrent (72.7%) than in the non-recurrent cases (12.5%).〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions:These results suggest that a subgroup of desmoid tumours at risk of recurrence may be hypervascular lesions associated with trisomy 8.

Notes: Various allergic diseases have been described in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In the present study, we evaluated the prevalence of allergic disease and serum IgE levels in 36 children of 26 mothers with SLE. None of the subjects had any rheumatic symptoms. There was at least one type of allergic disease in 28 (78%) of the 36 children of mothers with SLE, as compared with 30% in Japanese control children (P〈0.01). The prevalence of atopic dermatitis and bronchial asthma was higher in children of mothers with SLE (64% and 28%) than in controls (19% and 9%) (P〈0.01, respectively). Fourteen of the 36 subjects (39%) had higher levels of serum IgE than those of normal range for age-matched healthy Japanese children with no atopic family disease in the immediate family history, and these children had atopic disease. Among the 14 children with high serum-IgE levels, seven had neither immediate nor remote family history of atopic disease, while the others had an immediate family history of atopic disease. We think that genetic factors may influence the presence of allergic disease in children of mothers with SLE, and that the increased serum IgE levels in children of SLE mothers with no allergic family history may be a part of subclinical immunologic abnormalities related to SLE.

Notes: : Hydroperoxides and n-hexanal of soymilk made at different temperatures in the soybean grinding process were investigated. Both hydroperoxides and n-hexanal showed maximum amounts at 30°C, 37.78 μmol/g, and 1.94 mg/g, respectively. However, at 3°C and 80°C, amounts of hydroperoxides were about half of that at 30°C. N-hexanal showed high correlation with hydroperoxides except for at 80°C. It suggests that controlling the grinding temperature is effective to reduce hydroperoxidation and off-flavor content. Protein solubility an important index of soymilk, was decreased as the temperature increased. Grinding soybeans at low temperature is considered an economical method to produce soymilk having less off-flavor and high protein.

Notes: A histochemical and immunohistochemical study of five cases of extra-ocular sebaceous carcinoma was performed using formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded tissue specimens. Histochemically, the clear cells of sebaceous carcinomas were negative with periodic acid-Schiff and alcian blue staining. Immunohistochemically, the tumour cells of sebaceous carcinomas showed positive reactions for epithelial membrane antigen, human milk fat globules subclass 1, human milk fat globules subclass 2 and Leu M1, but did not express carcinoembryonic antigen, breast carcinoma associated antigen, S-100 protein, gross cystic disease fluid protein-15 or Dako M1. These histochemical and immunohistochemical findings were compared with those of other skin cancers which must be distinguished histopathologically from sebaceous carcinoma. We conclude that sebaceous carcinoma can be distinguished from eccrine porocarcinoma, malignant clear cell hidradenoma, extramammary Paget's disease, malignant trichilemmoma, squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma by histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques using formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded tissue specimens.

Notes: Although spindle cell haemangioendothelioma was initially described as a low-grade angiosarcoma, recent reports have suggested that it is a reactive or benign vascular proliferation. In order to assess the proliferative activity in spindle cell haemangioendothelioma, 12 cases, one of which was associated with Maffucci's syndrome, were immunohistochemically analysed with antibodies against proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), Ki-67 and p53. DNA flow cytometry was performed on six of the 12 cases. Seven of the 12 patients had multiple nodules or papules. Although two cases recurred once and twice, respectively, after surgery, there was no evidence of metastasis. Immunohistochemically, the percentages of PCNA, Ki-67 and p53 positive tumour cells ranged from 0.1% to 6.4% (mean 3.3%), 0.1% to 14.9% (3.5%) and 0.1% to 2.8% (1.1%), respectively, indicating a low proliferative activity and a low p53 expression in this tumour. All seven lesions from the six cases examined flow cytometrically were DNA diploid with proliferative indices (S + G2/M-phase fractions) ranging from 4.9% to 19.5% (mean, 10.9%). These findings are compatible with a bland-looking histological picture and an indolent clinical course of spindle cell haemangioendothelioma.
