Notes: Unsteady flow to a large-diameter well in a confined aquifer during recovery has been analyzed by discrete kernel approach. A family of type curves has been presented for different durations of pumping. These type curves provide a fairly accurate means of determining aquifer parameters from data of pump tests conducted in a large-diameter well. The replenishment of well storage at various times has been estimated.

Notes: Unsteady flow to a large-diameter well in a confined aquifer experiencing well loss has been analyzed by the discrete kernel approach. The well storage reduces the well loss component and the well storage is effective in the beginning of pumping. The inefficiency of a well is overcome by increasing the well radius. The variation of specific drawdown in a large-diameter well experiencing well loss with pumping rate is nonlinear. The nondimensional time drawdown graph at a large-diameter well, in which the well loss component follows the Jacob's equation, is not unique but dependent on pumping rate.

Notes: Using Zhukovsky's function and Schwarz-Christoffel conformal mapping technique, unconfined seepage from a river of large width has been analyzed for a steady-state condition. Seepage quantities occurring through the bed and the bank of the river have been estimated separately. The reach transmissivity constant for a river with large width has been determined. It is found that if the distance between the riverbank and the observation well is more than 0.5 Di, where Di is the saturated thickness of aquifer below the riverbed, the reach transmissivity constant is independent of drawdown at the observation well. The reach transmissivity constant depends on the depth of water in the river and the distance of the observation well from the riverbank.

Notes: Unsteady flow to a large-diameter well has been analyzed by a discrete kernel approach, taking well storage into consideration. The variation of drawdown with time has been obtained at the well and inside the aquifer. The validity of the new method has been verified by comparing the drawdown at the well with the drawdown given by Papadopulos and Cooper (1967). The aquifer contribution to discharge at various times has been estimated.

Notes: The disease visceral leishmaniasis is caused by a protozoan parasite, Leishmania donovani and is characterized by depressed cell-mediated immunity (CMI) and unhindered parasite growth in a susceptible host. The opposite trend is observed in a resistant host. However, the mechanism of this loss of CMI during the progressive disease is unknown as yet. In this report, we demonstrate that more than 40% of CD4+ T cells from a susceptible host undergo apoptosis resulting in a significant decrease in interleukin (IL)-2 and interferon (IFN)-γ secretion, leaving IL-4 secretion unaffected. These changes are not apparent in the case of CD4+ T cells derived from a resistant host. The data reported here suggest that experimental Leishmania donovani infection leads to selective deletion of the IL-2 and IFN-γ-secreting cells but not Th2-like cells in a susceptible but not a resistant host.

Notes: The protection against Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection is mediated by T helper type-1 (Th1) cells. Infection of BALB/c mice with M. tuberculosis downregulates expression of a Th1-specific costimulatory molecule, M150, on the surface of infected macrophages. The proliferation of Th cells and Th1-cytokine production by these cells are higher in case of M. tuberculosis antigen presentation by uninfected macrophages than by infected macrophages. The difference in inducing interleukin(IL)-2 and interferon (IFN)-γ secretion is abolished by providing bystander costimulation through M150 on liposomes.

Notes: Summary Inhibitory effect of different amino acids (L-phenylalanine, L-tryptophan, L-tyrosine, L-histidine-monochloride and L-arginine) on the phosphatase system of the brain, ventral nerve cord, stomach and intestine of the Indian medicinal leech Poecilobdella granulosa, was observed to be substrate, tissue, and inhibitor-specific. Most fascinating observation recorded was the activation of alkaline phosphatase of stomach and intestine by certain amino acids at low concentrations. This has been correlated with the sanguivorous habit of leeches.

Notes: Summary Histochemical localization of acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase in the salivary glands has unfolded the significant fact that salivary glands are of two types, one being enzymatically negative and the other showing positive activity. Activity of these enzymes has been linked with the operation of glandular dynamics, particularly concerning the synthetic and secretory processes. The enzymes have been seen localized in the core of jaw. Contrary to it they are absent in the papillary and interpapillary zones of the jaw. Absence of esterases in the papillary and interpapillary ductules has been correlated with its possible non-involvement in the synthesis of vasodilating and anticoagulating materials. The experiments on effect of biting on host tissue give a faint indication of vascular dilation due to bite. Likewise, experiments on enzymatic state of a salivary gland after leech-bite reveal that the diminution of the reactive coverage area in the salivary glands reaches its maximum in the case of ATPase, indicating thereby its more involvement in salivary functions than those of esterases and acid phosphatase.
