Notizen: A mechanism of communication through plasma sheaths which surround vehicles traveling at hypersonic velocities is proposed. The idea is to place a source of an intensive, high frequency electromagnetic pump wave on the vehicle and to use the nonlinearity of the medium to create a backscattered Stokes wave through the interaction of the pump wave with the signal-carrying wave sent by a ground transmitter. Such an interaction will be mediated by the plasma oscillations generated in the process of the resonant absorption of the signal-carrying wave. The advantages of this mechanism for information transfer are that the high frequency pump wave only is present in a small region near the vehicle and that the signal wave can have relatively low frequency.

Notizen: The dynamics of two-dimensional Rayleigh–Bénard convection rolls are studied in a finite layer with no-slip, fixed temperature upper and lower boundaries and no-slip insulating side walls. The dominant mechanism controlling the number of rolls seen in the layer is an instability concentrated near the side walls. This mechanism significantly narrows the band of stable wavenumbers although it can take a time comparable to the long (horizontal) diffusion time scale to operate.

Notizen: The transverse behavior of a laser beam propagating through a bistable optical cavity is investigated analytically and numerically. Numerical experiments that study the (one-dimensional) transverse structure of the steady state profile are described. Mathematical descriptions of (i) an infinite-dimensional map that models the situation, (ii) the solitary waves that represent the transverse steady state structures, (iii) a projection formalism that reduces the infinite-dimensional map to a finite-dimensional one, and (iv) the theoretical analysis of this reduced map are presented in detail. The accuracy of this theoretical analysis is established by comparing its predictions to numerical observations.

Notizen: $ \tau(|{{\vec k}}|) \mbox{\bf $\Theta$}_T = -\nabla\cdot (B(|{{\vec k}}|)\cdot {{\vec k}}), \,\, {{\vec k}} = \nabla \mbox{\bf $\Theta$},$ and its regularization describes natural patterns and defects far from onset in large aspect ratio systems with rotational symmetry. In this paper we construct explicit solutions of the unregularized equation and suggest candidates for its weak solutions. We confirm these ideas by examining a fourth-order regularized equation in the limit of infinite aspect ratio. The stationary solutions of this equation include the minimizers of a free energy, and we show these minimizers are remarkably well-approximated by a second-order ``self-dual'' equation. Moreover, the self-dual solutions give upper bounds for the free energy which imply the existence of weak limits for the asymptotic minimizers. In certain cases, some recent results of Jin and Kohn [28] combined with these upper bounds enable us to demonstrate that the energy of the asymptotic minimizers converges to that of the self-dual solutions in a viscosity limit.

Notizen: Abstract The spatial soliton plays a fundamental role as a robust, particle-like object which can be manipulated to switch or spatially scan collimated light channels or optical pulses which are incident at an oblique angle to an interface separating two or more selffocusing Kerr slab dielectrics. The underlying equivalent particle/multiparticle theory can also be employed to predict stability properties of nonlinear surface or guided waves, to derive an analytic expression for the nonlinear Goos-Hanchen shift at a nonlinear interface and to quantify the effect of material diffusion, linear and twophoton absorption on the switching behaviour of the light beam. Pulsed spatial switching effects are studied in order to illustrate the general predictive power of the equivalent particle theory.
