Notizen: Abstract A natural model of a discrete random surface lying above a two-dimensional substrate is presented and analyzed. An identification of the “level curves” of the surface with the Peierls contours of Ising spin configurations leads to an exactly solvable free energy, with logarithmically divergent specific heat. The thermodynamic critical point is shown to be a wetting transition at which the surface height diverges. This is so even though the surface has no “downward fingers” and hence no “entropic repulsion” from the substrate.

Notizen: Abstract We consider a lattice model of a binary mixture in which each molecule of one component can form zero, one, or two bonds to molecules of the same species on neighboring vertices of the square lattice. We allow the energy of molecules with two bonds to depend on the valence angle, thus generalizing the first paper in this series. If “straight” polymeric configurations are favored over all others, then a phase transition occurs for low enough temperature. On the other hand, if bent configurations are favored, there is no phase transition. Analogous results are obtained for the hexagonal lattice, where we distinguish energetically betweencis andtrans isomerism of four bonded molecules.

Notizen: Abstract We consider a two-dimensional Ising cylinder of circumferenceM and heightN, with a floating interface introduced by the appropriate boundary conditions. An exact analysis of the finite-size effects in surface tension is given and the scaling function for all temperatures is calculated. The results are compared with the Monte Carlo data of Mon and Jasnow.

Notizen: Abstract We continue our analysis of the phase diagram of a discrete random surface, with no “downward fingers,” lying above a flat two-dimensional substrate. The surface is closely related to the 2D Ising model and its free energy is exactly solvable in much (but not all) of the phase diagram. There is a transition at temperatureT w from a high-T infinite height or wet phase to a low-T finite height or partially wet phase. Previously it was shown that when a parameterb, related to the contact interaction, is positive,T w is independent ofb and there is a logarithmic specific heat divergence asT w is approached fromeither side. Here we show that forb〈0,T w does depend onb and there isno thermodynamic singularity from the wet phase. The partially wet phases forb⩽0 andb〉0 differ in the absence or presence of a monolayer covering the entire substrate; this results in a first-order transition across the lineb=0,T〈T w.

Notizen: Abstract Some recent results in the application of statistical mechanics to surfaces are discussed. Only exactly soluable models are described. First, we consider phase separation below the critical temperature in uniaxial ferromagnets and their analogs. We then consider the determination of the equilibrium shape of a crystal having fixed volume, given the orientation-dependent surface tension, using the Wulff construction.

Notizen: Abstract Analysis of finite-size corrections for the surface tension and surface stiffness coefficients in two-dimensional models with inclined interfaces is presented. We obtain a universal leading contribution proportional to (lnL)/L for the 2D system of sizeL. By explicit calculations for restricted and unrestricted solid-on-solid models and the square lattice Ising model, we demonstrate the Gaussian nature of rough interfaces with fixed ends, and derive the leading 1/L-type corrections for appropriate surface quantities.

Notizen: Abstract Using the spinor approach, we calculate exactly the complete spectrum of the transfer matrix for the finite-width, planar Ising model with adjustable boundary conditions. Specifically, in order to control the boundary conditions, we consider an Ising model wrapped around the cylinder, and introduce along the axis a “seam” of defect bonds of variable strength. Depending on the boundary conditions used, the mass gap is found to vanish algebraically or exponentially with the size of the system. These results are compared with recent numerical simulations, and with random-walk and capillary-wave arguments.
