Notes: Abstract HRGC-MS determinations carried out on samples collected in urban, suburban, rural, forest and remote areas suggest that several other classes of non-methane VOC than isoprene and monoterpene hydrocarbons can be emitted by plants. Because of their high photochemical reactivity, they can contribute to tropospheric ozone production which, in turn, can cause climate changes through radiative forcing.

Notes: Summary The UNICHIM method developed in Italy for the determination of PCDD and PCDF emitted from waste incineration plants is presented. Based on the experience gained during the last four years, some modifications are proposed in order to render this analytical tool adequate for present and future needs.

Notes: Summary The preparation of small bore columns (1 mm i.d.) packed with reversed-phase materials is described. High efficiency (Hmin=2 dp), coupled with a small C term (0.005 sec) have been obtained so that high speed can be combined with sufficient resolution for the separation of complex organic mixtures. These columns have been used for the separation of air pollutants dispersed in different matrices (air, particulate matter and rain water). Practical applications include the determination of aldehydes in air and emission samples, PAHs, nitrated and oxygenated PAHs in dust sampled from the stack of an industrial emission or collected in a urban area and the analysis of organic components dissolved in rain water collected at a rural site. Specific detection of these pollutants has been achieved by connecting small bore columns to UV absorbance, voltammetric and fluorimetric detectors. Mass spectra of some specific components have been recorded using the off-line technique.

Notes: Summary High efficiency, glass micropacked columns are evaluated in terms of Van Deemter plots showing that the same number of theoretical plates is obtained for hydrocarbons and polar compounds, such as aliphatic primary amines, alcohols and carboxylic acids. A direct GC-MS coupling system is employed showing no loss in resolution in the ion source even for very polar compounds. It is shown that the high capacity of GLSC micropacked columns is very effective in obtaining interpretable mass spectra of minor compounds in complex organic mixtures. Mass spectra obtained with the direct coupling are compared with those obtained with a conventional packed column of the same efficiency making use of a Biemann separator.

Notes: An analytical procedure is described for the fractionation of organic compounds present in environmental samples and the determination of nitro polyaromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAHs). Both low and high resolution liquid chromatography are employed for the prefractionation of the soluble organic fraction (SOF) extracted from particulate matter or gaseous pollutants collected on adsorption traps. High resolution gas chromatography is used to analyze four fractions containing alkanes, PAHs, nitro-PAHs, and other polar PAHs. Nitrogen-containing species are separated by GC and detected specifically using an alkali flame (NPD) detector. Flame ionization (FID) detection, GC-MS of positive ions, and negative ion chemical ionization MS of the whole fraction is used for the identification and quantitation of the various components. The composition of SOF extracted from particulate matter emitted from diesel exhausts is elucidated and a large number of nitro-PAHs identified by the combination of the various techniques.

Notes: A 15 m DB-17 fused-silica capillary column has been used to achieve the separation of all mononitrofluorarthene and mononitropyrene isomers. Linear Retention Indices and Relative Retention times for each component have been measured and the values were compared with those observed on DB-5 columns, commonly used for this separation. Increased polarity of the liquid phase results in better separation of some key isomeric pairs (such as 2-, 3-nitrofluoranthene and 1-nitropyrene, 8-nitrofluoranthene), difficult to resolve on DB-5 columns. Practical applications are reported. They include the analysis of extracts from emission samples (diesel exhaust and particles emitted by a factory manufacturing carbon electrodes) as well as atmospheric dust sampled in a urban area under different conditions.
