Description / Table of Contents:
Inhibition and InhibitorsBy corrosion-inhibition is meant every suppression of corrosion of metals or non-metals caused by one or several substances (Corrosion-Inhibitors) in so far these substances are ingredients of the corrosive agent. Corrosion-inhibitors cause the corrosive agent to form preserving films on the surface of the metal. (The film itself is not the inhibitor.)Physical inhibitors block the surface of a metal by adsorption. Chemical inhibitors react upon the surface of the metal forming thin, mostly multimolecular, covers or preserving films (Passivators or Deckschichtenbildner). Other chemical inhibitors do not react upon the surface but upon the corrosive agent (Destimulators). Physical inhibitors are sufficient to block the discharge of ions, which is a step of the corrosion process e. g. corrosion under discharge of hydrogen. Chemical inhibitors are necessary to suppress the passage of electrons from the metal to the ions of the corrosive agent, as is the case with corrosions consuming oxygen. The mechanism of physical and chemical inhibition its existence and use are thoroughly discussed.
Notes:
