Abstract The macrostructure and microstructure are studied for a solid melt of tungsten carbide and G13 steel with a stable and metastable matrix state after a dynamic load. It is shown that the use of a structurally unstable matrix state in the composite substantially reduces the scale of both the plastic strain and the fracture of similar composites, not only for quasistatic, but also high-rate dynamic loads.
