Notes: The localization of the L-like conduction states is found to change from the islands to the substrate in InAs quantum dots grown on GaAs as the island-size decreases. This is due to a size-induced modification of the strain state of the islands. The critical size should correspond to dislocation formation. As a result, small InAs islands coherently strained to GaAs exhibit optical properties markedly different from those of bulk InAs. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have studied the influence of InP buffer-layer morphology in the formation of InAs nanostructures grown on InP(001) substrates by solid-source molecular-beam epitaxy. Our results demonstrate that when InP buffer layers are grown by atomic-layer molecular-beam epitaxy, InAs quantum dot-like structures are formed, whereas InP buffer layers grown by MBE produce quantum-wire-like structures. The optical properties of these corrugated structures make them potential candidates for their use in light-emitting devices at 1.55 μm. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In-plane optical anisotropies of (001)-oriented InAs/InP self-assembled quantum wires and dots structures are studied by means of photoreflectance in the spectral region of the E1 transition of bulk InAs. The energy position of the transition observed in the quantum wires depends on the light polarization; quantum dots do not exhibit, in contrast, such an optical anisotropy. This anisotropy is attributed to the splitting of the four-fold degenerate E1 transition produced by the strong triaxial behavior of the strain that appears in wires and not in dots. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Samples of skin tissue were collected by biopsy darting from humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) in six seasonal habitats representing three stocks and four regions: Groups IV (western Australia), V western component (eastern Australia), V eastern component (New Zealand and Tonga) and VI (the Antarctic Peninsula and Gorgona Island, Colombia, South America) of the Southern Hemisphere. A variable section of the mitochondrial DNA control region was amplified and sequenced from 84 of these individuals, distinguishing a total of 48 unique sequences (i. e., mtDNA nucleotypes). Phylogenetic reconstructions suggested that these nucleotypes form three clades, corresponding to those previously described in a world-wide survey of humpback whale mtDNA variation, although bootstrap support for two of the clades was relatively low (〈50%). An analysis of variance adapted for molecular information showed significant differentiation of nucleotypes among the three Groups (Stocks) and heterogeneity of haplotype diversity among the four regions. A pattern of interchange within and between oceanic basins was demonstrated by the presence of shared identical nucleotypes among humpback whales in regions of the Southern and Northern Hemispheres.

Notes: The thermodynamic properties of some symmetric hard core Yukawa mixtures with positively and negatively nonadditive diameters are studied by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, and the results compared with the predictions of the mean spherical approximation (MSA). MSA results for the compressibility factors are obtained by taking as reference the semiempirical equation of state proposed by Gazzillo and Pastore for symmetric nonadditive hard sphere fluids. Our calculations show that the "exact'' computer simulation data are, in general, closely approximated by the MSA energy route to the thermodynamic properties. For the largest positive nonadditivity considered in this paper, some discrepancies appear between the compressibility factors obtained by MD and the MSA, but it is shown that the origin of the discrepancies lies in the hard core part of the compressibility factor rather than in the MSA theory of liquids.

Notes: Up to 70% success has been achieved using a simple technique of in ovulo embryo rescue for generating progeny From crosses between Allium cepa and A. fistulosum and other wild species of Allium. Pollen storage in liquid nitrogen has overcome problems associated with lack of synchrony of flowering between Allium species. The use of pollen tube growth for predicting crossability is brought into question.

Notes: Starting from optimal control, various series of infrared, ultrashort laser pulses with analytical shapes are designed in order to drive a preoriented molecule from its ground torsional state, which represents the coherent superposition of left and right atropisomers, towards a single enantiomer. Close analysis of the population dynamics, together with the underlying symmetry selection rules for the laser induced transitions, yields the mechanism. Namely, the molecule is driven from its ground vibrational state towards the coherent superposition of the lowest doublet of states via a doublet of excited torsional states with opposite symmetries. This pump-and-dump mechanism can be achieved by simpler series of analytical laser pulses. This decomposition of the optimal pulse into analytical subpulses allows us to design different scenarios for the selective preparation of left or right enantiomers. Exemplary this is demonstrated by quantum simulations of representative wave packets for the torsional motions of the model system, H2POSH, in the electronic ground state, based on the ab initio potential energy surface, and with ab initio dipole couplings. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The orbital free ab initio molecular dynamics method is applied to study the static and dynamic structure of liquid Al near the triple point. The method uses a new kinetic energy functional, along with a local pseudopotential constructed within the same kinetic energy functional. The results obtained for the dynamic structure factor are compared with recent experimental data. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is a disease characterized histologically by an eosinophilic infiltration of the gut. The cause of this disease remains unclear, although both food allergy and food intolerance have been implicated in its pathogenesis. We report the case of a 22-year-old man in whom gastrointestinal symptoms first appeared in childhood, with involvement of mucosa and muscularis layers of stomach and bowel. He presented high IgE blood levels, and his prick test was positive to bovine, pig, and lamb sera. Immunoblots from calf, pig, and lamb sera, incubated with the patient's serum and revealed by autoradiography, demonstrated the presence of a 65-kDa protein band that was recognized by IgE antibodies but not by IgG. This band corresponded to bovine serum albumin, while IgE did not show reactivity with human albumin. These data suggest a possible role for IgE-mediated hypersensitivity mechanisms in the pathogenesis of eosinophilic gastroenteritis.

Notes: Twenty young adult atopic patients and their matched controls were studied. Spontaneously generated and Con-A-induced suppressor T cell functions as well as Natural Killer (NK) activity against K-562 target cells, measured in a short-time 3H-thvmidine uptake were evaluated suppressor T cell activity in the patients was more than 2 SD lower than that found in the controls and there was, contrary to expectation, a direct correlation between suppressor function and serum IgE levels. Atopic patients showed a statistically significant lower NK activity than normal controls when related to a low IL-2 production, Both facts inversely correlated with the concentration of IgE in serum. We concluded that atopic patients' vulnerability to viral infections may be due to defective NK activity. Suppressor T cell function is abnormal in these patients. Both defects could be due to a faulty immunoregulatory helper function.
