    Notes: Abstract A new method of nonradial pulsation mode identification is developed. This method is based on Fourier analysis of time series line profile variations that have been merged into a one-dimensional equally spaced dataset. In principle, this method is identical to that of two-dimensional Fourier transform of line profile time series, but it is much more convenient to use for most of astronomers who have experience in period analysis of light curves. The features of both temporal frequency and Doppler spatial frequency can be accurately retrieved. This method provides an easy way to carry out mode identification from line profiles and minimizes the uncertainty of mode determination caused by random noise. Comments and assessment of related methods of mode identification are given.

    Notes: Abstract. We have synthesized the ytterbium fulleride compounds YbxC60 (x=1–6) at a range of lower temperature (530 °C–570 °C). Except for the nominal composition Yb3C60 compound, which has been reported in the references, we also obtained a new phase Yb6C60, whose structure is orthorhombic with space group P21212 and unit cell parameters a=21.28 Å, b=20.13 Å and c=15.89 Å. The YbxC60 compounds are sensitive to oxygen, the samples exposed in air convert to an amorphous phase and Yb2O3 compound.

    Notes: Summary In the present study we examined the effect of systemic tocainide on sensory hypersensitivity in rats after spinal cord ischemia induced by a photochemical technique. After induction of spinal cord ischemia the rats exhibited a sensory disturbance which was mainly expressed as vocalization to innocuous cutaneous mechanical stimuli (allodynia) in the flank area during the following several days. Tocainide at 75 mg/kg i.p., but not 50 mg/kg i.p., significantly increased the vocalization threshold to mechanical pressure for 2 h. The effect of intraarterial (i.a.) tocainide on the responses of dorsal horn wide-dynamic-range (WDR) neurons to suprathreshold electrical stimulation of their receptive fields was also examined in normal rats and after transient spinal cord ischemia, at a time when the animals exhibited typical behavioral allodynia in the dermatomes innervated by the ischemic spinal segments. In normal rats, tocainide (50 mg/kg i.a.) strongly suppressed the responses of WDR neurons to C fiber input with lesser effect on A fiber input. In allodynic rats, tocainide suppressed the augmented A and C fiber mediated responses of WDR neurons to the extent that their responses were similar to those seen in normal rats without tocainide. There was no difference in the overall depression of A and C fiber mediated input by tocainide between normal and allodynic rats. The present results demonstrated the analgesic effect of systemic tocainide in relieving allodynia in rats and indicated that systemic local anesthetics, at doses that do not block nerve conduction, can be effective in suppressing dorsal horn WDR neuronal activity. Although such drugs primarily suppress C fiber induced activity, the depression by local anesthetics of increased A fiber induced responses in allodynic conditions mediated by myelinated afferents may explain the analgesic effect of such drugs on behavior.

    Notes: Abstract  The effect of intravenous administration of the local anaesthetic lidocaine (1, 3 or 5 mg/kg) on the responsiveness and size of the cutaneous receptive fields of 18 lumbar dorsal horn neurons was examined in intact urethane-anaesthetized rats. Lidocaine induced expansion of the receptive field in the majority of neurons examined, particularly after the two higher doses. The expansion occurred usually within 10 min after lidocaine injection and the effect was reversible. Lidocaine also altered the responsiveness of dorsal horn neurons to peripheral mechanical stimulation. The responses of wide-dynamic-range neurons to noxious pinch were usually inhibited by lidocaine. However, some low-threshold neurons started to react to noxious mechanical stimulation and some high-threshold neurons started to respond to innocuous brushing after lidocaine injection. The present results show that moderate doses of systemic lidocaine induce complex changes in the excitability of dorsal horn neurons, including an increase in the size of the receptive field and altered response characteristics to mechanical stimulation.

    Notes: Abstract Juvenile hormone III (JHIII), when applied to the abdomen of 1-day-old female Acheta domesticus (in quantities that would create JHIII titers in the hemolymph that were within the range measured in females of this species) caused a significant decrease in phonotactic thresholds (Fig. 1). Removal of the corpora allata from 5-day-old females with low phonotactic thresholds caused significantly increased phonotactic thresholds 2–5 days later. After a temporary increase (24 h) of, on average, about 25 dB, the phonotactic thresholds drop to about 10 dB above preallatectomy levels (Fig. 2), but remain significantly higher than controls. Application of JHIII to allatectomized females, with a mean increase in thresholds of 20 dB, results in significantly decreased thresholds (mean of about 20 dB) over the next 6 h (Fig. 3). Exposure to males 1 week before the imaginal molt causes the phonotactic thresholds of postimaginal females to drop 1–2 days significantly earlier than controls (Fig. 4). One- and 3-day-old females, phonotactically tested only once, exhibit lower thresholds in the early morning than they do in the late afternoon (Fig. 5). Five-day-old females do not exhibit such a diurnal rhythm. Phonotactically testing females more than once a day significantly influences their phonotactic thresholds (Figs. 6, 7). In 1-day-old females, with high (above 70 dB) phonotactic thresholds, the threshold of their L1 auditory interneurons can be 30 dB or more below their phonotactic threshold (Fig. 8). In females with phonotactic thresholds of 70 dB or lower, the L1 threshold is within 10 dB of their phonotactic threshold. Both JHIII and allatectomy influence phonotactic and L1 thresholds in a similar manner.

    Notes: Abstract Two kinds of chemical reactions were studied in two different microemulsion systems: cetyltrimethylammonium bromide/1-butanol/10 and 25% n-octane/water and sodium dodecyl sulfonate/1-butanol/20% styrene/water. One reaction is a hydrolysis reaction, in which aspirin and 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene were used as the hydrolysis substrates. The second reaction is the polymerization of styrene, which was initiated by using two initiators, water-soluble K2S2O8 and oil-soluble 2,2′-azobis(isobutyronitrile), and, at the same time, the polymerization of acrylamide, which was initiated by NaHSO3, was also studied. All the hydrolysis reaction experimental results show that the hydrolysis is greatly affected by the structures and the structural transitions of microemulsions. The hydrolysis rates are higher in water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsion media and decrease with the addition of water. The rates increase in bicontinuous (BC) microemulsions and decrease in oil-in-water (O/W) microemulsions. The transition points of the hydrolysis rates occurred at the two microemulsion structural transition points from W/O to BC and from BC to O/W. The polymerization relationships between the conversions of styrene, the molecular weights of polystyrene and the water contents of the microemulsion system were obtained. The effects of microemulsion structures on the sizes of the polystyrene particles and on the molecular weights of the polymers are discussed. Polystyrene particles with diameters of 10–60 nm were observed by microscopy. Our experimental polymerization results show that microemulsions are suitable as media for the production of polymers, the molecular weights and the particle sizes of which can be controlled and predicted by variations in microemulsion structures.

    Notes: Abstract Experimental results of research on the influence of deposition temperature (T s) on crystal structure and superconductivity of Y1−x HoxBa2Cu3O7 −δ (YHBCO) films deposited by dcmagnetron sputtering are reported. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the films grew with preferential orientation of thec-axis normal to the substrate surface in the range of temperature 750–820°C. The single-crystal structure of the YHBCO films grown epitaxially at the optimal substrate temperatures of 820, 800, 760, and 750°C, respectively, have been established by rocking curves, Φ-scan, and electron channeling pattern (ECP). Typical values of the critical current density (A · cm−2) at 77 K and 0.1 T field are 2.1×105, 4×105, 6.2×105, and 3.1×105 for thex=0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.7 films respectively, measured by a Quantum Design magnetrometer (H∥c).

    Notes: Abstract The critical current densityJ c of Y1−x Ho x Ba2Cu3O7−δ (YHBCO) epitaxial thin films withx=0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.7 at various temperatures and magnetic fields has been measured magnetically. TheJ c and flux pinning density Fp values are significantly enhanced with the Ho substitute amountx with the optimal effect achieved at Ho concentration around x=0.4 in the entire measured temperature (30–77 K) and magnetic field (0–3 T) ranges. X-ray diffraction patterns have shown that the greater the lattice deformation, the higher theJ c of the films.
