Notes: The microhardness and electrical resistivity have been measured on thin Hf-N films, covering the entire composition range from pure Hf to overstoichiometric HfN. Influence of substrate bias on the properties of stoichiometric HfN films has also been studied. All films have been prepared by high-rate reactive magnetron sputtering at a substrate temperature of 400 °C. Both hardness and resistivity increase as nitrogen is added to the α-Hf phase. For the cubic HfN phase the hardness has a maximum, ≈3500 HV, and the resistivity a minimum, 225 μΩ cm, at a composition close to stoichiometry. However, both values are considerably higher than those reported for bulk samples. This is explained in terms of nonequilibrium growth conditions, giving rise to high densities of dislocations and interstitially incorporated nitrogen atoms. For films with a nitrogen content above 50 at. % a very high-resistivity value is found, 2.0 Ω cm at maximum. By applying a low substrate bias voltage the resistivity of stoichiometric HfN was decreased with a factor of about 3, and simultaneously a grain growth and/or reduced defect concentration was observed. At higher bias voltages the resistivity increases and the grain sizes decrease.

Notes: Thin films of Hf-N, covering the entire composition range from pure Hf to overstoichiometric HfN, have been prepared by reactive magnetron sputtering. The structure of the films has been investigated by x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy and the composition has been determined using Auger electron spectroscopy. A solubility of ≈30 at. % nitrogen is found in the α-Hf region. Above 30 at. % N a multiphase structure consisting of α-Hf, HfN, Hf3N2, and/or Hf4N3 is found, which is not in agreement with the equilibrium structure. In the mononitride region a lattice parameter of ≈4.53 A(ring) is observed. This value is slightly higher than reported bulk values due to intrinsic stress in the films. Increasing the nitrogen content above 50 at. % causes a distortion of the cubic symmetry of the lattice. This is first observed as an increase in the (111) interplanar spacing while other spacings decrease. Also a splitting of some reflections occurs at higher nitrogen contents. This phase transition is suggested to be due to a successive change from a cubic to a rhombohedral structure.

Notes: Abstract— Immunoelectrophoretis, gel filtration-electrophoresis and immuno-gel filtration of cerebral fluid samples obtained from five patients with subacute sclerosing leucoencephalitis and known to contain an abnormal γ-globulin fraction (γe) produced strong evidence that the γc-globulin is made up of several components of small molecular size. This fraction is obviously not homogeneous, since some of the cases show more than one precipitate on immuno-gel filtration with immune serum against γ-globulin. The γc appears to be closely related to the Fab-fragment of human γ-globulin.

Notes: In a material of seventy-two persons over 70 years of age. forty-seven cases of amyloidosis of the heart were found. In thirty-nine cases, deposits occurred only in the atria (isolated atrial amyl-oidosis. IAA), while in eight cases amyloid also was seen in the ventricles (senile cardiac amyloidosis, SCA). In some of the latter cases, small amyloid deposits occurred in other organs, especially the lungs. Some definite differences existed between the amyloid substance in SCA and IAA. Thus, tryptophan was demonstrated histochemically in SCA but not in IAA, and, furthermore, amyloid fibrils isolated from patients with IAA lacked protein ASCA, the fibril subunit protein of senile cardiac amyloid. It is concluded that the ageing heart may be the target of two different forms of amyloid, one only affecting the atria, while the other is more widespread within the heart and sometimes also is found in other organs.

Notes: Brain interstitial and cerebrospinal fluid drainage into the lymphatics was studied by injections of 5μl of packed sheep red blood cells (SRBC) injected into the caudate nucleus, the occipital lobe, and the lateral ventricle of the brain in mice. The number of plaque-forming cells (PFC) was determined in the deep cervical lymph nodes, the axillar lymph nodes, and the spleen, and the number of PFC was compared with the response in the same tissues after Intravenous immunization with 0.1 ml 10% SRBC. The weight of the deep cervical lymph nodes increased 3.0 times on day 3 after injection in the brain parenchyma compared with the weight of these nodes after intravenous immunization. The antigen-specific response peaked on day 5, 392±37 PFC/106 for IgG in the deep cervical lymph nodes after antigen deposition in the caudate nucleus, whereas only a minor peak in the antigen-specific response was obtained after intraventricular antigen deposition, 127±79 PFC×106 for IgG on day 6. There were no increased PFC in any of the lymph nodes after intravenous immunization. The experiments show an antigen-specific response in the deep cervical lymph nodes after intracerebral antigen deposition, whereas antigens deposited in the lateral ventricles drain preferentially to the blood, with a high response in the spleen.
