Notizen: Electrical conductance (λ) was measured continuously and in vivo on leaf surfaces of Vicia faba and Aegopodium podagraria. λ increased with rise and decreased with fall in humidity, exhibiting a hysteresis during an applied humidity cycle [90–20–-90% relative humidity (r.h.)]. After treatment with NaNO3 aerosols, a sudden increase in λ was observed at 73% r.h., which is close to the deliquescence point of the salt. Transpiration and electrical conductance of untreated leaves were measured simultaneously under conditions of constant r.h., while the photosynthetic photon flux density and CO2 concentration of the air were varied to induce changes of stomatal aperture. At 35% r.h., changes of light and CO2 level revealed a strong correlation between stomatal conductance (gS) and λ for Vicia faba leaves. This was also found at 90, 75, 60, 45 and 25% r.h. on the lower but not on the astomatous, upper surface of Aegopodium podagraria. The correlation between gS and λ for stomata-bearing leaf surfaces indicates that an equilibrium exists between the ambient water vapour phase and the liquid water phase on and within the cuticle. This is modified by transpired water vapour influencing the air humidity inside the boundary layer. Our results imply re-condensation of transpired water vapour to salts on the leaf surface and its sorption to the cuticle.

Notizen: Probiotics for aquaculture are generally only selected by their ability to produce antimicrobial metabolites; however, attachment to intestinal mucus is important in order to remain within the gut of its host. Five candidate probiotics (AP1–AP5), isolated from the clownfish, Amphiprion percula (Lacepéde), were examined for their ability to attach to fish intestinal mucus and compete with two pathogens, Aeromonas hydrophila and Vibrio alginolyticus. Two different radioactive isotopes were used to quantify competition between pathogens and probionts. Attachment of the pathogens was enhanced by the presence of the candidate probiotics. However, the addition of the candidate probiotics after the pathogens resulted in reduced pathogen attachment. Only AP5 caused lower attachment success of V. alginolyticus when added before the pathogen. When AP5 was added first, the average attachment change was 41% compared with 72% when added after V. alginolyticus, suggesting that the probiotic is displaced but that enhanced attachment of the pathogen does not occur. Conversely, when V. alginolyticus was added first, followed by AP5, attachment change was 37% while AP5 had 92% attachment change when added second. This implies that the pathogen was displaced by the candidate probiotic and therefore it appeared that, based on the ability of probiont AP5 to attach to mucus, the growth of the pathogen in the digestive tract might be suppressed by the candidate probiont's presence.

Notizen: Abstract. In a closed recirculating fish culture system with a rotating disc filter serving as ‘biofilter”, waterquality was maintained by the addition of hydrolysed corn starch in the settable solids tank. According to the feed uptake by rainbow trout. Salmo gairdneri Richardson, starch was introduced to adjust a nutrient relation of organic C:N of 1·6:1 for the bacterial biomass. Trout grew from 42 g to 254 g in body weight in 118 days. No differences in feed uptake and feed conversion rate were observed in a control group held in a flow-through system with tap water as culture medium.

Notizen: The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy and mode of action of 2-phenoxyethanol as an anaesthetic for two size classes of goldfish, Carassius auratus (L.), at three different temperatures. Goldfish (2.15 ± 0.05 g, and 9.19 ± 0.17 g) were exposed to 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 ml 2-phenoxyethanol l1 at 20, 25, and 30oC. Time needed to induce anaesthesia was dependent on concentration and water temperature. At temperatures at and below 25oC, 0.4 ml l1 was needed to induce total loss of equilibrium within less than 15 min. Above 25oC, 0.5 ml l1 was required to induce anaesthesia. Recovery rate was independent of the length of anaesthesia, which indicates that the anaesthetic is taken up and lost via a concentration gradient at the gill membrane and skin/solution interface. Fish recovered within less than 10 min after they had been taken out of the anaesthetic solution. In a second experiment, goldfish responded to a repeated exposure to 2-phenoxyethanol daily over a period of 14 days with increased tolerance, which indicates a habituation response to the anaesthetic. The use of 2-phenoxyethanol as an anaesthetic both for short-term anaesthesia and for anaesthesia under transport conditions is discussed.

Notizen: Intensive grow-out of goldfish, Carassius auratus (L.), larvae and juveniles in closed systems requires the control of environmental conditions and feeding. This study investigates the use of different types of live food and combinations of live food and dry food in a series of four rearing experiments. Juvenile goldfish can be weaned from Artemia onto live food at about 24 days after the onset of feeding without causing a reduction in growth and survival. The replacement of Artemia by Daphnia at day 10 appears feasible, as growth and survival were not significantly affected. Fish fed decapsulated Artemia cysts grew better than fish fed live Artemia. Within the first 14 days, goldfish juveniles should be fed at least 155 cysts per fish per day to achieve fast growth and to minimize size variation.

Notizen: To test the effect of stocking density on growth, survival rates and size distribution of juvenile swordtails, Xiphophorus helleri Heckel, under different environmental conditions, fish were stocked at rates of 1, 3 and 6 fish I−1. Growth was monitored over a 14-week period. Fish were weighed in six groups of 20 fish per tank. Size variation was determined at the end of the growth period by measuring the total length of each fish to the nearest mm. Fish were stocked in two different systems at three stocking densities (1, 3, and 6 fish I−1) in replicate. The systems were an indoor aquarium system and a tunnel system under semicommercial conditions. In each system, increasing stocking rates resulted in a significant reduction of growth rates. In the aquarium system, survival rate was not related to stocking density, whereas in the tunnel system, fish at the highest stocking density had a lower survival rate than those kept at the two lower stocking densities. The number of marketable fish above a set size limit of 40 mm total length was not higher in fish stocked at 6 fish I−1 than at 3 fish I−1 at the end of the study. Therefore, a stocking rate of 3 fish I−1 would be optimal. At the end of the study, fish were categorized into males, females and immature fish. Fish with a clearly visible gonopodium were classified as males, those with typical female characteristics as females, and small fish that were not yet differentiated as immature fish. The ratio of females to males was highly skewed in both systems, favouring a higher percentage of females. As stocking density increased, the female:male ratio was significantly reduced, which would result in a greater number of saleable pairs at increased stocking density. The implications of these results for the management of intensive production of swordtails are discussed.
