Notes: The crystal structure of the as-prepared form of poly(5,7-dodecadiyne-1,12-diyl-bis-phenylurethane), customarily called TCDU, has been reexamined by an x-ray analysis. Bond lengths of the conjugated polymer backbone chain presently determined indicate that the structure of the as-prepared form of TCDU crystal is more close to that predicted for the acetylenic structure than the hitherto presumed butatrienic one.

Notes: Abstract The extradiol ring-cleavage dioxygenases derived from seven different Pseudomonas strains were expressed in Escherichia coli and the substrate specificities were investigated for a variety of catecholic compounds. The substrate range of four 2,3-dihydroxybiphenyl dioxygenases from biphenyl-utilizing bacteria, 3-methylcatechol dioxygenase from toluene utilizing Pseudomonas putida F1, 1,2-dihydroxynaphthalene dioxygenase from a NAH7 plasmid, and catechol 2,3-dioxygenase from a TOL plasmid pWW0 were compared. Among the dioxygenases, that from Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes KF707 showed a very narrow substrate range. Contrary to this, the dioxygenase from pWW0 showed a relaxed substrate range. The seven extradiol dioxygenases from the various Pseudomonas strains are highly diversified in terms of substrate specificity.

Notes: Abstract  We examined the function of putative sensory fibers that are contained in intercostal nerves and innervate interscapular brown adipose tissue (IBAT) in urethane-anesthetized rats. Warming the IBAT to 40–44°C with two small heaters placed bilaterally on the skin above it attenuated the subsequent noradrenaline-induced thermogenesis (NIT) of the IBAT. In this range of warming, higher IBAT temperatures resulted in more attenuation. Denervation of IBAT blocked the effect of thermal stimulation on the NIT. Thus, activation of nerve fibers in IBAT that are sensitive to warmth or to the nociceptive effects of heat probably attenuated the NIT. Since the putative sensory fibers in the IBAT contain calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and substance P, which are thought to act in peripheral tissues, we tested the effects of injection of these neuropeptides into the IBAT. Administration of 5.2 nmol CGRP but not substance P or vehicle saline mimicked the effect of thermal stimulation of IBAT. As the neuropeptide-containing primary sensory neurons are characterized by their sensitivity to capsaicin, we also tested its effects (1 mg/kg, s.c.) and found that it also attenuated the NIT. Denervation of the IBAT or pretreatment with capsazepine, a capsaicin receptor antagonist, blocked the effect of capsaicin. We propose that temperature- and capsaicin-sensitive nerve fibers release CGRP to attenuate the NIT of brown adipocytes.

Notes: Abstract. Body temperature is usually regulated by opposing controls of heat production and heat loss. However, systemic administration of capsaicin activates heat loss and heat production simultaneously. Because capsaicin receptors are located mainly on primary sensory neurons and body temperature is regulated by the central nervous system, we investigated the brain mechanisms involved in these capsaicin-induced thermal responses. For this purpose, we examined the effects of spinalization and decerebration on these responses in artificially ventilated, urethane-anesthetized rats. Cervical spinal transection largely attenuated both responses, showing the critical involvement of the brain. Colonic temperature (T c) did not change after the capsaicin administration to the spinalized rats. Decerebration between the hypothalamus and midbrain prevented the capsaicin-induced heat loss and enhanced the capsaicin-induced heat production. Consequently, T c increased without a hypothermic period. The results show that capsaicin activates brainstem-controlled heat production and forebrain-controlled heat loss separately.

Notes: Aromatic oligoamides of DP = 5 and 11 that have all meta-phenylene linkages were prepared by controlling the ratio of isophthaloyl chloride and diamines [m-phenylenediamine and bis(3-aminophenyl)acetylene], and then end-capped with aniline or 2-aminobiphenylene. Aromatic oligoamides having para-phenylene linkages were also prepared similarly using terephthaloyl chloride as a monomer. The oligoamides that have all m-phenylene linkages were soluble in organic solvents such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and N,N-dimethylacetamide, though the oligoamides having p-phenylene linkages were much less soluble. The oligoamides having acetylene units in the backbone showed exotherm due to crosslinking. The onset of the exotherm appeared at 310-340°C for the oligoamides having all m-phenylene linkages, and 330-370°C for the oligoamides having p-phenylene linkages. They were melt-processed at 350 or 380°C for 1 h, giving tough and insoluble films from oligoamides having all m-phenylene linkages and brittle films from oligoamides having p-phenylene linkages. The films showed excellent thermal properties. For example, viscoelastic analyses showed little decrease of mechanical property up to 370°C, and Tg was not observed below the temperature. Thermogravimetric analyses also showed that thermal stability of the melt-processed films were excellent. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The star-shaped polymer with trans-tetrapyridyl complex of Ru(II) as a core was prepared by complexation of ester-linked pyridyl-terminated poly(oxyethylene) (M̄n = 2000) with a Ru5Cl122- cluster. The unimodal peak of the star-shaped polymer in the gel-permeation chromatogram was shifted to a higher molecular weight region than that of the starting prepolymer. The electron-withdrawing ester substituent in para position of the pyridine ring shifted the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) band into the visible region.

Notes: The ambient-pressure superconductor a-(EDT-TTF)[Ni(dmit)2], which is a charge transfer salt formed between EDT-TTF and Ni(dmit)2, exhibits a superconducting transition at 1.3 K and a phase transition around 20 K featuring a characteristic resistance hump.We estimated that the room-temperature electrical conductivity was 140-370 and 14-36 S cm-1 for the current parallel and perpendicular to the conducting plane respectively. We measured the upper critical magnetic field (Hc2) in the superconducting phase. The temperature dependence of Hc2 was estimated |d Hc2/dT| T = Te = -0.27 T K-1 (B||c-axis); |dHc2/d T| T = Tc = -3.5 T K-1 (B||ab-plane). The anisotropy of Hc2 within the ab-plane was found to be quite small, indicating a two-dimensionally isotrope character within the ab-plane in the superconducting state of the salt.
