    Notes: Abstract. Dynamical mechanical spectrometry experiments were performed on undoped polyaniline films to provide some information on the microstructure by the analysis of the molecular motions. A mechanical relaxation located at around 200 °C has been related to the polyaniline glass transition. At higher temperature, evidence is given for a thermal degradation which is attributed to crosslinking reactions as confirmed by thermogravimetry and FT-IR experiments.

    Notes: Abstract Acacia mangium, a N2‐fixing tree legume, has become a major plantation tree species in the tropical humid and sub-humid zones. In addition to being a major pulp-wood producer, the tree has a good potential to restore soil fertility as a fallow species in agroforestry systems, and as a fuel species. In this paper, we report an overview of the results from several rhizobium inoculation field trials in different edaphic and ecological conditions, conducted by the CIRAD-Forêt (The Forest Program of Centre de Coopération Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Développement) in partnership with national research organizations of various countries of the humid and sub-humid lowlands of West Africa and Cook Islands. Rhizobium inoculation had a positive effect on tree growth up to 39 months after tree planting. Immunological identification of the Bradyrhizobium strains present in the nodules confirmed the persistence of the more efficient introduced strains up to 42 months after transfer of the inoculated trees to the field. In Côte d'Ivoire, nitrogen derived from atmospheric N2 fixed symbiotically by A. mangium was 50% in the whole trial and up to 90% in plots with less fertile soils when the trees were inoculated with an efficient strain.

    Notes: Abstract Under conditions of iron limitation many rhizospheric bacteria produce siderophores, ferric iron-specific ligands, which may enhance plant growth by increasing the availability of iron near the roots. Thirty-five strains of Rhizobium ciceri, specific to chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), were screened for their ability to grow on iron-deficient medium and to produce siderophores. Maximal growth of all strains previously depleted in iron was obtained in medium containing 5 to 10 μm of ferric iron. When iron limitation was achieved by the addition of 2,2-bipyridyl or EDDHA [ethylene diamine di(o-hydroxyphenyl) acetic acid] to the medium, only two strains were able to scavenge iron and grow. Siderophore production by these two strains was detected by the Chrome Azurol S assay (CAS), a universal test for siderophores. No hydroxamate-type siderophores were detected in the supernatants of Rhizobium ciceri cultures. However, some strains secreted salicylic acid and 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid as phenolate-type siderophores. Addition of ferric iron to the culture medium increased growth yield significantly but depressed the production of siderophores. Although these compounds are produced in response to iron deficiency, nutritive components of the culture medium significantly affected their production. It seems that CuII, MoVI and MnII ions bound competitively with iron to siderophores, resulting in a 34 to 100% increase in production.

    Notes: Abstract This work was designed to determine the role of the acidity and aluminium stress in the selection of partners in the Acacia symbioses with relevance to the persistence of the microsymbiont Bradyrhizobium in the soil and the growth and nodulation of the host plant respectively. Fifteen strains of Bradyrhizobium from Acacia mangium and Faidherbia albida formed a very homogenous acid tolerant group as indicated by their ability to grow better in a medium at pH 4.5 than in a medium at pH 6.8. By contrast, a growth experiment using an acid liquid media (pH 4.5), containing different concentrations of aluminium successfully identified strains sensitive to aluminium toxicity and those able to grow even in the presence of 100 μM AlCl3. Our results suggest that high amounts of aluminium in the soil rather than acidity (pH 4.5) were a major soil factor for selection of Bradyrhizobium strains capable of establishing a permanently high population under natural conditions. Unlike the behaviour of the microsymbiont, growth and nodulation of Acacia mangium and Faidherbia albida were not affected by aluminium, even at 100 μM, but they might be significantly affected by medium acidity (pH 4.5) depending on plant provenances. It is therefore suggested that ability of the host plant to tolerate acidity stress should be taken into account first when screening effective Acacia-Bradyrhizobium combinations for use in afforestation trials.

    Notes: The viscoelasticity of latex/PS beads composites, having the same volume content of latex and PS beads, but various porosity ratios and specific surfaces of particles has been investigated in the glass temperature range of the latex matrix. In order to give evidence for the main factors governing the viscoelastic properties, data were compared to numerical simulations based on the Christensen and Lo model and Skorokhod's approach. Such modelings were performed by considering either the latex matrix of the PS beads as the continuous phase. It was concluded that the glassy modulus is mainly governed by the volume fraction of porosity, while the rubbery modulus is controlled by both the interactions between phases and the void volume content. The location of the mechanical relaxation seems to be governed by the mechanical coupling between phases, which implies some local phase inversion. The magnitude of the mechanical relaxation depends not only on the chemical coupling induced by the interactions between phases, but also on the mechanical coupling.
