    Notes: Two methods based on the free-volume theory of transport are developed for the estimation of diffusion coefficients for trace amounts of solvents in amorphous polymers. The first method uses diffusivity data for a polymer-solvent system above the glass transition temperature to estimate the temperature dependence of the mutual diffusion coefficient below this temperature. In the second method, mutual diffusion coefficients are estimated for a particular polymer-solvent system both above and below the glass transition temperature using no diffusivity data for the system. The predictions of the proposed theory are compared with diffusivity data for the n-pentane-polystyrene and ethylbenzene-polystyrene systems.

    Notes: New diffusivity data are presented for solvent diffusion in poly(vinyl acetate), poly(methyl methacrylate), and polystyrene. These data are used to test the predictive and correlative capabilities of a recently proposed free-volume theory of diffusion. Comparisons of data and theory showed that the proposed theory provided an accurate description of diffusion in concentrated polymer solutions.

    Notes: Results from a number of theories for the concentration dependence of the mutual diffusion coefficient in dilute polymer solutions are examined, and clarifications are made as to what forms of the equations for these theories should be used in comparisons with experimental diffusivity data. An evaluation of the available theories for the concentration dependence of the diffusivity under theta conditions is carried out using experimental diffusivity data taken using sharp fractions of polystyrene. It is concluded that the Pyun - Fixman theory appears to provide the most promising method for estimating the concentration dependence of the mutual diffusion coefficient in dilute polymer solutions at the present time.
