Notes: x Ba1-xNb2O6 (x=0.5) films (abbreviated as SBN:0.5) on SiO2-coated Si substrates are potential components for the application of integrated electro-optics devices. SBN:0.5 optical waveguiding thin films on SiO2-coated Si substrates with a very thin MgO diffusion buffer have been successfully prepared by pulsed laser deposition. The as-grown films have a refractive index of 2.28, which is close to that of bulk SBN. X-ray analysis showed that the as-grown films have a single-phase tetragonal tungsten bronze structure. The SBN:0.5 thin films prepared by PLD exhibit favorable ferroelectric and optical waveguiding properties. The composition and the morphology of the films were also examined by XPS and by SEM, respectively. Ferroelectric SBN:0.5 optical waveguiding thin films on SiO2-coated Si substrates are expected to be used in integrated electro-optic devices.

Notes: Formation of partial nanocrystal and amorphous tungsten alloys was synthesized via crystallization of a completely amorphized tungsten alloy synthesized by mechanical alloying. Structural characterization shows formation of amorphous structure from mechanical alloying of a mixture of elemental tungsten and iron powders after about 150 hours. Partial nanocrystalline phases within theamorphous matrix were formed through annealing the amorphous tungsten alloy at 1075°C

Notes: 3 (PT) in ambients of oxygen, nitrogen, and argon was studied by using a CCD camera. Two optical filters with different transmittance bands were used to identify the excitation, dissociation, ionization, and, especially, the chemical reactions in the plume. The results show that the atomic processes and chemical reaction mechanisms in the plume formed in active oxygen are very different from those formed in inert argon and nitrogen. It is proposed that the chemical reactions between ablated metal species and ambient oxygen are initiated by the strong shock wave formed during the propagation of the PT plume.

Notes: Abstract. A Monte Carlo approach based on the Q-state Potts model is developed to describe and simulate the dynamic hysteresis of Potts spin lattice against periodic time-varying external field E. The dynamic responses of the hysteresis loops against frequency ω of applied field and domain size R are studied. It is revealed that the hysteresis loops for the system energy W, polarization P, and domain wall fraction Π depend considerably on the frequency and domain size. The remnant polarization Pr shows a single-peak pattern as a function of ω. The P-E loop exhibits thin rhomb and fat rhomb patterns at low ω, whereas a tip-smoothed rhomb and roughly elliptical pattern is observed at high ω. The loop area can be scaled with Ω≈ω1/3 at low ω. The frequency dependency of the dynamic hysteresis is explained in terms of a simplified phenomenological model. At very small domain size, the dynamic hysteresis is significantly compressed, predicting the polarization weakening effect at small domain size.

Notes: Abstract. New methods for fabricating highly 〈001〉-oriented and complete 〈111〉-textured Pb(Ta0.05Zr0.48Ti0.47)O3 (PTZT) films on Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si(001) substrates by pulsed-laser deposition have been developed using conductive oxide La0.25Sr0.75CoO3 and SrRuO3 electrodes. The 〈001〉-preferred orientated PTZT ferroelectric capacitor was not subjected to loss of its polarization after 1×1010 switching cycles at an applied voltage of 5 V and a frequency of 1 MHz, and the 〈111〉-textured PTZT film capacitor retains 94.7% of its polarization after 1.5×1010 switching cycles at 5 V and 50 kHz. The PTZT capacitors using these conductive oxide electrodes have low leakage current dominated by Schottky field emission mechanism.

Notes: Abstract. Voltage shifts of hysteresis loops of metalorganic decomposition (MOD)-derived SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT) thin films, known as imprint, have been observed after exposing the thin-film capacitors to unipolar pulses. The voltage shift changes with cumulative total time at maximum voltage, following a relationship with no pulse-width dependence. The origin of the voltage shift is briefly discussed in terms of an internal bias field induced by injected electrons trapped at positive polarity. The pulse-measurement responses are greatly affected by the internal bias field, even though no imprint failure was observed up to 1010 unipolar pulses. The voltage shift and asymmetric properties can be removed easily by applying bipolar pulses of saturation amplitude.

Notes: Abstract. The heterostructures La1-xSrxCoO3/Pb(Ta0.05 Zr0.48Ti0.47)O3(PTZT)/La1-x SrxCoO3 have been deposited on SiO2/Si(001) substrates using Pt/TiO2 as conductive barrier by pulsed-laser deposition. La0.25Sr0.75CoO3(25/75) bottom electrodes with a pseudo-cubic perovskite structure favors (001)-textured growth of PTZT films. The ferroelectric capacitor LSCO(25/75)/PTZT/LSCO(25/75) remains about 96% of its polarization after 5×1010 switching cycles at an applied voltage of 5 V and a frequency of 500 kHz. The cross-section morphology of scanning electron microscopy and Rutherford backscattering spectra show that no obvious interdiffusion occurs across the interfaces.

Notes: Abstract. The most prominent phenomena on the target surface induced by laser irradiation in pulsed laser deposition is the formation of conical morphologies in the irradiated area. The conical morphologies formed under different laser fluences and the ambient oxygen pressures in KrF laser ablation of Pb(Zr0.53Ti0.47)O3 were studied in detail by using scanning electron microscopy. The results indicate that, depending on the melting extent of the irradiated surface, there are two kinds of cones: one type with well-defined cone tip and cone body and the other having only a cone tip. Pb is very deficient in cone tip. The gas ambient pressure plays a remarkable role in the laser–target interaction. These results are interpreted by employing the impurity shielding mechanism and the surface instability mechanism.

Notes: Abstract. The perovskite La0.5Sr0.5MnO3-δ/La0.7Sr0.3CoO3-δ (LSMO/LSCO) bilayers and LSMO/LSCO/LSMO trilayers are fabricated by pulsed laser deposition and their magnetic and magnetoresistive properties are investigated. The “waist”-like magnetic hysteresis for both the bilayer and trilayer is explained in terms of the inter-layer exchange coupling model based on the large difference in coercivity between LSCO and LSMO layers. The shrink of hysteresis with temperature is attributed to the temperature dependence of the magnetic crystalline anisotropy and conduction band width W. We observe smoothed remnant resistance of the multilayers over a rather wide temperature range (〉100 K), while the magnetoresistance (MR) is not seriously damaged.
