Notes: Abstract In this paper we describe an attempt to isolate superheavy elements from Atlantis II hot brine deposits. Volatile, sulfidic elements (Cd, Pb) were isolated and investigated for spontaneous fission events with a mica-plastic solid state track detector sandwich. During nearly two years exposure time no spontaneous fission activity was observed. The upper limit for the concentration of superheavy elements (following this chemistry) in the Atlantis II-material is found to be 1.4·10−14g/g. This limit is more than one order of magnitude lower than the concentration of a spontaneous fission activity in material from the Cheleken hot brine, as observed by Flerov and coworkers.

Notes: Abstract A search for an unknown spontaneously fissioning activity, possibly due to SHE, was carried out with the Dubna3He-counter system. In the investigation of Salton Sea samples and Atlantis II samplesno such activity could be detected with limits≦3×10−12 g/g.

Notes: Abstract The search for superheavy elements /SHE/ in the carbonaceous chondrite Allende was continued. This time we carried out a thermochromatographic separation at 1050 °C in O2-, resp., H2-gas flow. The volatile fraction /mostly Pb/ was collected on a Pt-foil or trapped in KOH-solution. The heavy element probes were investigated for spontaneous fission activities. We observed zero spontaneous fission decays during 421 days. This yielded an upper limit of ≤2.9 fission x kg−1 x year−1 /95% confidence limit/. We were unable to confirm the existence of a spontaneous fission activity in the meteorite Allende.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Using over 100 samples of roe deer venison taken largely from the Rural District of Marburg-Biedenkopf and adjoining areas, a biological half-life of 21.9±2.2 days was established for caesium in roe deer. Since the radioactive contamination of the environment after Chernobyl and, therefore, the intake of radioactivity by the animals lasted for only a very short period of time, no significant contamination levels are expected through the consumption of newly killed roe deer. After 120 days, the radioactivity of caesium in a live roe deer has subsided again to less than 1/40 of its initial value.

Notes: Abstract Superheavy elements (SHE) might be formed via a reaction mechanism called “fusion after instantaneous fission”, which is supposed to occur during the collision of a deformed very heavy nucleus with a spherical one. We bombarded natural uranium targets with lead ions and searched for alpha-emitting and spontaneously fissioning reaction products. Different techniques were used: a rotating wheel, a gas jet system and a radiochemical procedure. No SHE have been found. The upper cross section limits are between 10−33 cm2 and 10−34 cm2 within the half-life range from 1 ms to 1 year. In addition, the production cross sections of some Cm and Cf isotopes and of Am fission isomers were determined.

Notes: Abstract Absolute cross sections and thick target/thick catcher recoil properties have been determined for radionuclides produced in the reaction between copper and 86 MeV/A12C ions. Integration of the obtained mass yield curve gives a cross section of reactions leading to spallation products of 1,440 mb. TheF/B-ratios are found to increase with decreasing product mass, reaching a maximum of ∼100 for products with masses 20–25 mass units lower than the target mass, followed by a decrease. The recoil data have been analyzed with the two-step vector model to deduce momentum transfer and product kinetic energies. The momentum transferred to an intermediate system is found to increase for reactions leading to decreasing product masses, reaching values of 1/3 of full momentum transfer. The derived mean kinetic energies are found to be higher than found in comparable proton induced reactions. Some possible explanations for this phenomenon have been discussed. The results have been compared with Monte Carlo cascade-evaporation calculations, and the agreement between the predictions and experiment is in general found to be good.

Notes: Abstract In heather honey from Lüneburger Heide relatively high values of cesium activity were found (up to about 650 Bq/kg). Activity values for heather honey,Calluna vulgaris plants and soil have been measured. It is to be assumed that the origin of this activity is the direct washout and fallout of Chernobyl activity in clouds to the plants. There may also be a high transfer of cesium from the soil to theCalluna vulgaris plant, but in order to determine the transfer factor, fresh plants are needed, which have grown later than in spring 1986.
