Notes: Summary The dynamic propagation of a finite crack under mode-I loading in a micropolar elastic solid is investigated. By using an integral transform method, a pair of two-dimensional singular integral equations governing stress and couple stress is formulated in terms of displacement transverse to the crack, macro and micro rotations, and microinertia. These equations are solved numerically, and solutions for dynamic stress intensity and couple stress intensity factors are obtained by utilizing the values of the strengths of the square root singularities in macrorotation and the gradient of microrotation at the crack tips.

Notes: Summary The problem of flow of certain non-Newtonian liquids in a porous pipe is discussed by introducing second order terms in the stress-strain velocity relations of classical hydrodynamics. The Navier-Stokes equations resulting therefrom for the system have been solved exactly to obtain a complete description of the non-Newtonian flow. The analysis has been limited to two-dimensional steady-state laminar flow. The solution of the flow equations leads to detailed expressions for the dependence of the velocity components and the pressure on position coordinates, dimensions of the pipe and fluid properties.

Notes: The subspace iteration method is widely used for the computation of a few smallest eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors of large eigenproblems. Under certain conditions, this method exhibits slow convergence. For improving the convergence of the method, a few acceleration techniques are already available in the literature. In this paper, yet another method is presented. The method has been applied for the computation of a few smallest eigenpairs of some typical eigenprobiems. The results indicate that the acceleration method is efficient for large eigenproblems. Simplicity, ease of computer implementation, absence of parameters whose values are to be chosen based on experience and effectiveness for large problems are the attractive features of the proposed method.
