    Notes: The absolute quantum yields (Φ) for OH production from 193 and 248 nm photolysis of HNO3 and H2O2 are measured at room temperature using flash kinetic spectroscopy in a flow tube. The OH radicals are produced by excimer laser photolysis and probed via direct absorption of high resolution, tunable IR laser light. The resulting quantum yields are found to be ΦHNO3193=0.47±0.06, ΦH2O2193=1.22±0.13, ΦHNO3248=0.75 ±0.10, and ΦH2O2248= 1.58±0.23. These results indicate quantum yields for both precursors at both wavelengths which are less than the maximum possible values of 1 for HNO3 and 2 for H2O2. The present measurements are discussed in light of contrasting results suggested from other work.

    Notes: Microwave and submillimeter transitions for Ar–NH3 have been observed and assigned for the ∑ and Π states correlating asymptotically with Ar+NH3 (j=1,||k||=1). The ∑ states are found to lie below the Π states and are separated by approximately the inversion splitting of free NH3. For the Π states the NH3 inversion tunneling is nearly quenched, being only weakly allowed through Coriolis interactions with the nearby ∑ states. The observed microwave and submillimeter spectra also allow the determination of 14N quadrupole coupling constants and relative submillimeter absorption intensities. All the above results are interpreted using a model internal–rotation inversion Hamiltonian, leading to detailed information about the anisotropy of the intermolecular potential.

    Notes: The interconversion tunneling frequencies for (HCl)2 and (DCl)2 are obtained from near-infrared absorption spectra of the H(D)Cl stretching transitions, to spectroscopic precision for the mixed 35Cl–37Cl dimers. A phenomenological model of the interconversion process explains several experimental observations, and provides good estimates of the splittings expected for the 35Cl–35Cl and 37Cl–37Cl species.

    Notes: Abstract A laboratory cadaveric model, developed previously for the study of currently employed external fixation devices used for unstable pelvic fractures was used to evaluate rigidity improvements associated with a number of fixation design innovations. Based on quasistatic shearing displacements measured at the sacro-iliac joint and symphysis pubis disruption sites, otherwise identical anterior frameworks constructed on 5 mm fixation halfpins, rather than upon standard 4 mm halfpins, were able to sustain markedly (58% to 210%) greater loadings. A new and very simple traingular framework was designed and constructed for which the fixation rigidity was found to rival that of much more complex and cumbersome double anterior frames. When used as the posterior component of combined anterior/posterior fixation systems, a new double cobra-type (internal) plate allowed the injury model pelvises to sustain near-physiological load levels. A pair of dynamic compression plates attached across a disrupted symphysis pubis was found to be a biomechanically acceptable substitute for an anterior external fixator.

    Notes: Abstract Experiments were conducted to determine the effects of surface texture and normal load on the stiffness of joints formed by two machined surfaces. The experiments involved deformation measurements and examination of the contact surfaces of joints subjected to normal loads. It was shown that surface-displacement results can be affected by assuming that the compressive strain in the joint specimen is the same as in an equivalent solid piece. The elastic stiffness of joints were found to increase with an increase in the maximum nominal surface pressure. Results were also shown to illustrate that the elastic stiffness of a joint is affected by the loading history. Surface-profile measurements indicated that the topography of a joint surface changed with normal load, and that the deformation of a surface profile was related to the permanent change measured by extensometers placed across the joint interface.
