The stability of SnCl4 · 2 POCl3, TiCl4 · 2 POCl3, and SbCl5 · POCl3 is investigated by means of Raman spectroscopy. SnCl4 · 2 POCl3, existing unambigously in the solid state, does probably also exist in excess SnCl4. TiCl4 · 2 POCl3, being stable as a solid, partly dissociates when dissolved or molten. SbCl5 · POCl3 is stable in both the solid and molten state; almost no dissociation occurs in dichloromethane.Alterations in the POCl3-part of the spectra indicate a decrease of the P=O double bond character (decrease of v P=O) in the adducts and, according to observed upward shifts of the PCl valence vibration frequencies, increased PCl bond strengths due to an enhancement of the electronegativity of phosphorus via a shift of the π-electrons to oxygen.
Notes:
