Notes: We report the reactive magnetron sputter deposition of a metastable antiferromagnetic oxide, (Ni81Fe19)O or permalloy monoxide (PyO), suitable for exchange biasing permalloy (Ni81Fe19 or Py) film layers at room temperature or for manipulating metallic Py film coercivities. Examples are presented demonstrating how PyO can be incorporated in Py/Cu/Py-based exchange biased spin valves (SV) or nonexchange biased pseudo-spin valves (PSV) using the same metallic Py target for fabricating both the PyO pinning layer and the Py metallic layers. The presence of a Ti seed layer beneath the PSV or SV film structures and the oxidized silicon substrate is shown to have an insignificant effect on the film magnetic properties, demonstrating the feasible use of Ti as an adhesion or diffusion barrier layer in hybridized microelectronic devices based on silicon. Glancing incidence parallel beam x-ray diffraction data are presented supporting the existence of the antiferromagnetic monoxide rocksalt phase for the PyO. In addition, vibrating sample magnetometry and four point probe magnetoresistance analysis data are presented for the SV and PSV films. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The prevalence of dental caries and dental fluorosis was examined in 380 14-yr-ofd children living in four geographic areas of Sri Lanka with water F levels of 0.09-8.O ppm. A reduction in caries prevalence by 43% was recorded in children consuming 0.6 0.79 ppm F compared to those in tow fluoride areas (〈0.4 ppm). Among those consuming drinking water containing 〈 1.0 ppm F however, 32% of the children had mild forms and 9% severe forms of dental fluorosis (Dean's index). Although other sources of F may contribute to this effect, the prevalence and severity of dental fluorosis seen in tow fluoride areas was confirmed to be high in rural Sri Lanka. Our data are comparable with recent findings from other tropical countries, e.g. Kenya and Senegal, and reaffirm that WHO guidelines for the upper limit of F in drinking water may be unsuitable for developing countries with a hot, dry climate. Current knowledge now enables us to recommend 0.8 ppm as an appropriate upper limit for F in drinking water supplies for these populations.

Notes: The chemical composition of tank and pond reared and wild young grey mullet, Mugil cephalus L., ranging in length from 15 to 75 mm was studied. Tank reared mullet had a higher percentage of protein, carbohydrate, total lipid and a lower moisture content than wild fish. These differences are attributed to the artificial diet, available in excess, as well as the relatively inactive life in the confined spaces of the rearing tanks. M. cephalus in general has a high percentage of total lipid and therefore, can be classified as a ‘fatty’ fish. The highest level of protein in tank reared fish was found in those kept at a salinity of 20‰. Fish reared on an excess diet in fresh water tended to show a close similarity to wild fish in trends of change of chemical constituents with growth.

Notes: Suitable methods to process full-fat flour from dried winged bean seeds, their effect on trypsin-inhibitor activity and keeping qualities of the flour were studied. Soaking in 0.5% or 1% sodium bicarbonate solution and boiling for 30 – 45 min was found to be suitable process for hull removal. Dry dehulling methods resulted in only 14 – 22% hull separation, while wet processing treatments were not effective. Soaking the winged bean seeds (12 hr) in 0.5% sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate and sodium chloride solutions reduced 30 – 40% of the trypsin inhibitor activity. Winged bean full-fat flour could be stored for 4 wk under ambient conditions.

Notes: SUMMARY.– The development of the cutaneous capillaries has been studied in 40 infants aged 1 day to 17 weeks. At birth there is a disorderly capillary network. There is a gradual development to an orderly subpapilliary plexus and papillary loops by 14th–17th week of life. In areas of creases this development is delayed, while in the palms, soles and nail folds there is an early development of capillary loops. An attempt has been made to correlate this development with certain dynamic physiological processes during the neonatal period as well as with exposure to the cold environment. These physiological processes are:(a) increase in skin surface area(b) increased blood viscosity related to〈list xml:id="l1" style="custom"〉(i) increased haematocrit(ii) decreased oxygen tension(iii) low blood pressure(iv) increased transudation of fluid from blood vessels(v) decreased sedimentation rate(vi) decreased red cell flexibility.

Notes: Summary Extracts of hamster-human and mouse-human hybrids, some with translocations involving chromosome 19, have been assayed for both human spleen ferritin (rich in L subunits) and human heart ferritin (rich in H subunits). Hybrid lines retaining part of the long arm of chromosome 19 including the region 19q13.3→19qter produced human “L” type ferritin. This confirms the previous assignment of the “ferritin gene” to chromosome 19 (Caskey et al. 1983). However, lines retaining chromosome 11 were found to contain human “H” type ferritin suggesting that the gene for the “H” subunit is on this chromosome. The presence of chromosome 6 was not necessary for the expression of either “H” or “L” type human ferritin. It thus seems unlikely that the gene for idiopathic haemochromatosis is a ferritin gene.

Notes: Abstract The effect of body size and salinity on the rate of digestion of young grey mullet, Mugil cephalus L., was studied using the “sacrifice” method. The rate of digestion was found to be salinity-dependent, being slower at lower salinities than at higher salinities. This is correlated to higher food intake at the lower salinities. Rate of digestion was also found to be dependent on body size, increasing with increasing body weight.
