Asymmetric Syntheses with Ketenes, VII1). Tertiary Amines Containing an Asymmetric C Atom as Catalysts for the Asymmetric Synthesis of Methyl α-Phenylpropionate16 Optical active bases containing an asymmetric secondary C atom linked to N are tested for their stereospecific catalytic behaviour in the reaction of methanol and phenylmethyl ketene. The stereospecifity vs. temperature functions are related to the configurations of the catalysts. Strong steric hindrance of the internal rotation of the N—C* bond causes deviations from the normal relationships between structure and stereospecifity. Based on these observations and in accordance with them, a new model for the preferred conformation of the transition state controlling this type of reactions is proposed. - The synthesis and configuration of the catalysts used are described.
Notes:
