Notes: Abstract • Background: Indocyanine green videoangiography (ICGV) has recently advanced and become widely available as a clinical tool. We tested the efficacy of ICGV in evaluating metastatic choroidal tumors. • Methods: ICGV using Topcon 50-IA was performed in five patients with clinically diagnosed choroidal metastatic tumors. The findings were compared with those of conventional fluorescein angiography (FAG). • Results: Compared with FAG, ICGV demonstrated more smooth and regular hypofluorescent lesions, precisely indicating the exact size of the tumor. In all cases, no tumor vessels were found. The choroidal vascular integrity around the tumors was observed. FAG, however, was more sensitive in detecting the tumor development than ICGV when the extent of the hypofluorescent lesion could be seen clearly in the early phase. FAG provided more information regarding retinal pigment epithelial dysfunction in the outer blood retinal barrier overlying the tumor. • Conclusion: Since ICGV enables visualization of tumors through the retina, it is very useful, particularly in cases of associated secondary retinal detachment around the tumors. ICGV combined with FAG provides more precise assessment of the tumors themselves and their response to treatment than FAG alone.

Notes: Abstract A lot of discrete approximation schemes for stochastic differential equations with regard to mean-square sense were proposed. Numerical experiments for these schemes can be seen in some papers, but the efficiency of scheme with respect to its order has not been revealed. We will propose another type of error analysis. Also we will show results of simulation studies carried out for these schemes under our notion.

Notes: Abstract A new triple surgery procedure was applied to 20 primary open-angle glaucomatous (POAG) eyes. This technique comprises trabeculotomy with narrow (2–3 mm) fornix-based scleral flap, combined with extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) and posterior chamber intraocular lens (PC-IOL) implantation. As to surgical results, at two years postsurgery 53% (9/17) of the eyes were controlled under 21 mm Hg without medication, 35% (6/17) with topical medication alone. Eighteen (90%) eyes showed improved visual acuity of two or more Snellen lines. No serious postoperative complications occurred. There was no significant difference in postoperative astigmatism as compared with ordinary ECCE and PC-IOL surgery. Trabeculotomy with fornix-based scleral flap offers the advantage of simple and safe surgery when combined with ECCE and PC-IOL implantation.

Notes: Abstract The stability constants for the inclusion of alkanols withα-cyclodextrin (α-CD) in aqueous solutionhave been determined using the surface tension method. Dataanalyses assuming 1 : 1 stoichiometry were appliedto estimate the stability constants of thesecomplexes. The stability constants obtained using this methodwere in reasonable agreement with the corresponding values inthe literature. Chemically modified α-CDs could not beused in this method because those CDs themselves have surfaceactivity. In addition, the relation between the stability constantsand the carbon number of alkanols is discussed.

Notes: The chromatographic characteristics of a liquid crystal bonded phase have been evaluated for the separation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), especially focusing on its shape recognition capability in supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC). The results clearly indicate that the phase has a stronger molecular planarity and shape recognition capability than typical polymeric and monomeric octadecylsilica (ODS) phases because of the very ordered bonded phase structure. The recognition capability was slightly dependent on SFC conditions such as column pressure, column temperature, and mobile phase density. Modifier addition did not make a large difference on the recognition capability. The phase seems to be a very promising stationary phase in SFC because the recognition capability is slightly influenced by the SFC conditions. Selectivity enhancement for molecular shape and planarity recognition has been found in SFC compared to reversed-phase LC separations with the same stationary phase.

Notes: Chromatographic separation of C60 and C70 fullerenes was performed with phenylpropyl and three different methoxyphenylpropyl bonded phases in microcolumn liquid chromatography. The results indicate that the 3,4-dimethoxyphenylpropyl phase possesses the best resolving power among the evaluated phases, producing a separation factor of 1.87 for C70 and C60 using n-hexane as the mobile phase. This observation could be explained by examining the energy minimized conformations of the bonded phases and their associative interactions with the fullerene molecules.

Notes: The liquid chromatographic separation of C60 and C70 fullerenes with liquid crystal bonded silica phases was carried out and the separation performance was evaluated with various mobile phase compositions and column temperatures. The results clearly indicate that one liquid crystal bonded phase possesses better retention capability and separation power for these fullerene molecules than commercially available octadecylsilica (ODS) phases. The capacity factors of C60 and C70 were 2.82 and 8.46, respectively, with n-hexane as the mobile phase. In contrast to the normal temperature dependency of the retention of some polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) versus column temperature, unusual behaviors for C60 and C70 have been observed with the liquid crystal phase.

Notes: A chemically bonded C60 silica phase was synthesized as a stationary phase for liquid chromatography (LC) and its retention behavior evaluated for various polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) using microcolumn LC. The results indicate that the C60 bonded phase offers selectivity different from that of octadecylsilica (ODS) bonded phases in the separation of isomeric PAHs. With the C60 phase, PAH molecules having a partial structure similar to that of the C60 molecule, e.g. triphenylene and perylene, were retained longer than with ordinary ODS stationary phases. The results also show that good correlation exists between the retention data with this C60 bonded phase and with C60 itself as the stationary phase.

Notes: Abstract Thiosalicylic acid selenotrisulfide(SeT) was prepared by the reaction of thiosalicylic acid and selenious acid in methanol. The precipitated SeT was partially purified by an extensive washing with methanol and pure SeT was isolated by preparative high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using a reverse phase column. The HPLC method was useful both in the analysis and the isolation of SeT.

Notes: Abstract A new method that can assess the kinetics of in vivotransepithelial transport in rat kidney has been established. The method is based upon a multiple-indicator dilution experiment and the moment analysis theory. After simultaneous bolus injections of p-aminohippurate (PAH) and inulin into the right renal artery, blood samples were taken from the carotid artery and urine was separately collected from right and left ureters. The characteristic response for the first passage of drugs through the right kidney was evaluated by taking blood circulation into consideration. To determine the mean artery-tovein transit time and the extraction ratio in the kidney, an intravenous injection was also performed as a reference experiment for deconvolution. The urinary excretion curve corresponding to the first passage was obtained as the difference between both kidneys. The mean artery-tolumen transit time (mean transepithelial transit time, ¯T cell )was computed by subtracting the mean urinary transit time of inulin from that of secreted PAH. Sinc transport across the luminal membrane into the lumen from tubular epithelial cells can influence the cellular residence time of drugs, ¯ Tcell and the single-pass mean residence time in epithelial cells (¯T cell.sp )can be thought of describing luminal membrane transport. The value of ¯T cell obtained for 0. t mM PAH was 22 sec and it was prolonged to 61 sec in the presence of probenecid, suggesting an inhibitory effect on transport across the luminal membrane. On the other hand, antiluminal membrane transport into cells from blood is characterized by the volume of distribution in the kidney (Vd PAH ). Vd PAH was remarkably decreased by treatment with probenecid, indicating an inhibitory effect on antiluminal membrane transport. The effects of probenecid on both sides of epithelial cell membrane transport were first demonstrated in vivo. The present method is useful for the analysis of in vivotransepithelial transport including antiluminal and luminal membrane transport for drugs excreted via tubular secretion.
