    Notes: Abstract The exposure of dental personnel to chloroform in root-filling procedures was evaluated. Four different root filling procedures were studied. In all the procedures studied, gutta-percha was used as the root-filling material and chloroform or sealers containing chloroform were used. Ten teeth in each group were root-filled. In the first group, chloroform and 5% rosin in chloroform were administered in medical cups, in the second group chloroform and Kloroperka NØ was administered in medical cups. In Group three a specially designed glass tube (S-endodip) was used for administration and in the fourth group specially selected plastic tubes were used. In the last two groups the sealers were chloroform and 5% rosin in chloroform. When medical cups were used the exposure reached levels close to the accepted limit values in Sweden, indicating that only one root filling per day can be performed without the dental team being unacceptably exposed. Using either the glass tube or the specially designed plastic tube, the exposure was significantly reduced for the dentist (p〈 0.005) and for the nurse (p〈 0.005). The mean exposure was 19.1 mg/m3 for the dentist and 11.6 mg/ m3 for the nurse in the first experimental group. The mean values in the second group were 15.4 mg/m3 and 16.6 mg/m3 respectively. In the third group, the dentist was exposed to a mean of 4.4 mg/m3 and the nurse to 6.3 mg/m3 In the fourth group, the mean exposure was 2.2 mg/m3 and 3.4 mg/m3 respectively. The results of this study indicated that chloroform in combination with 5% rosin in chloroform could be used safely if care was taken and the liquids were administered in special tubes.

    Notes: Summary Three human bladder carcinoma cell lines, T 24, RT 4, and MANO, a human bladder nonmalignant epithelial cell line, HCV-29, and a human lung fibroblast line, 460 Hl, were investigated for their ability to induce fibrinolytic, urokinase and plasmin inhibitory activities in cell culture, using serum-free medium, for up to 36 h. Generally, the non-malignant cell line and the fibroblast line had a greater ability to produce urokinase inhibitor than did the malignant cell lines. The amount produced varied greatly between cells and over the study period. A low concentration of plasminogen activator, immunologically identical with urokinase, and its accumulation in culture supernate were found with RT 4 after 12 h and 24 h cultivations, whereas no plasminogen activator was detected in all other cell lines for periods up to 36 h. No plasmin, non-specific protease or plasmin inhibitory activities were detected in any of the supernates from the cell lines.

    Notes: Summary The influence of decreased urinary fibrinolysis on renal stone formation was studied in rats fed on a calculus producing diet. The alteration in the isolated glomerular fibrinolytic activity indicating the amount of urokinase produced has also been investigated using a histochemical fibrin slide technique. The glomerular fibrinolytic activity was significantly enhanced by both tranexamic acid and the dietary treatment. The induced antifibrinolysis resulted in a significantly higher incidence of grossly visible calculi in the renal pelvis and in calcified deposits along the cortico-medullary border of the kidney. The results support the concept that a decline in urinary fibrinolytic activity can lead to the formation of renal stones.

    Notes: Abstract Circumscription of the tribeCinchoneae (Rubiaceae) is reconsidered on the basis of a cladistic analysis of structural data comprising 48 characters (164 states). It is concluded that the tribeCinchoneae, in order to be monophyletic, should be restricted to compriseCapirona, Cephalodendron, Cinchona, Cosmibuena, Dolicholobium, Ferdinandusa, Joosia, Ladenbergia, Macrocnemum, andRemijia. It is also suspected, on insufficient evidence, thatMaguireocharis, Pimentelia, andStilpnophyllum belong here.Alseis, Calycophyllum, Schizocalyx, andWittmackanthus form a monophyletic group possibly related to theCinchoneae. A new tribe,Calycophylleae, is proposed to accommodate them.Hillia, which is possibly the sister group of theCinchoneae, is retained in a separate tribe.Coptosapelta, Corynanthe, Crossopteryx, Hymenodictyon, Luculia, Mitragyna, Mussaendopsis, Paracorynanthe, Pausinystalia, andUncaria are referred to the same tribe, for which the nameCoptosapelteae has to be adopted. Probably alsoGreeniopsis belongs here. The generaCigarilla, Coutarea, andExostema, and possiblySyringantha andWernhamia, seem to be most closely related toPortlandia and should be transferred to the tribeCondamineeae. Bouvardia, Coursiana, Danais, Duidiana, Dunnia, Heterophyllaea, Hindsia, Lecanosperma, Manettia, Merumea, Neohymenopogon, andSchismatoclada should be provisionally transferred to the tribeHedyotideae, which is suspected to be polyphyletic, however. No conclusive results were reached concerning the position ofBalmea, Blepharidium, Emmenopterys, andSuberanthus, the position of them remaining uncertain.

    Notes: Abstract The phylogeny of the subfamilyRubioideae (Rubiaceae) was estimated from sequence variation in therps16 intron (cpDNA) in 143 ingroup and 5 outgroup taxa. The analysis largely confirms a recent one based onrbcL sequences, but branch support is often much stronger. Three of the traditional subfamilies are supported,Rubioideae, Cinchonoideae s. str., andIxoroideae s. l. while there is no support forAntirheoideae. TheRubioideae are the sister group of all otherRubiaceae and comprise the tribesAnthospermeae, Coccocypseleae, Cruckshanksieae, Coussareeae, Gaertnereae, Hedyotideae, Knoxieae, Morindeae, Ophiorrhizeae, Paederieae, Pauridiantheae, Perameae, Psychotrieae, Rubieae, Spermacoceae, Theligoneae, andUrophylleae. TheHamelieae andHillieae belong to theCinchonoideae. Rachicallis andSiemensia should be transferred from theHedyotideae to theCinchonoideae. ThePauridiantheae, Urophylleae, Ophiorrhizeae, andRaritebe form the basalmost subclade of theRubioideae. The second basalmost clade consists of the generaLasianthus andPerama. The third basalmost clade consists of the tribesCoussareeae, Coccocypseleae andCruckshanksieae, and the generaDeclieuxia andHindsia. The tribesKnoxieae, Anthospermeae, Argostemmateae, Paederieae, Theligoneae, Rubieae, Hedyotideae, andSpermacoceae are members of one clade. TheKnoxieae are monophyletic ifOtiophora, Otomeria, andPentas are included. The tribeAnthospermeae is supported as monophyletic, but its subtribes are not. ThePaederieae, together withTheligonum, form a paraphyletic grade basal to theRubieae. TheHedyotideae, includingSchismatoclada, form a grade at the base of theSpermacoceae. TheGaertnereae are monophyletic and distinct from thePsychotrieae. TheMorindeae are monophyletic and includeDamnacanthus andMitchella. Schradera is the sister group of theMorindeae. ThePsychotrieae are monophyletic when theGaertnereae, Lasianthus, andDeclieuxia are excluded. The recognition of a subtribeHydnophytineae leaves the rest of thePsychotrieae paraphyletic.Psychotria is paraphyletic with respect to all other genera of the tribe. Approximately 50 genera are here classified for the first time based on molecular data.

    Notes: Two enzymes, phosphoglycerate mutase and peroxidase, were purified by using an immobilized metal ion adsorbent for the removal of unwanted proteins. The mutase was obtained pure from a single column, whereas the purification of peroxidase required the use of a thiophilic adsorbent in a tandem. The capacity was 2.5 mg pure peroxidase per mL gel.

    Description / Table of Contents: Die Bruttogeschwindigkeit bei der Xanthogenierung von Cellulose mit niedrigem Molekulargewicht in homogener Phase wurde spektrophotometrisch unter Verwendung eines „stopped flow“-Verfahrens studiert. In anderen Experimenten wurde die Anzahl von primären und sekundären Xanthatgruppen bestimmt, und aus den Ergebnissen beider Methoden wurden die individuellen Geschwindigkeitskonstanten bestimmt.Die Resultate zeigen, daß die Xanthatbildung eine Reaktion zweiter Ordnung ist; sie ist von der Schwefelkohlenstoff- und Alkoholatkonzentration abhängig.
    Notes: The total rate of xanthation of low molecular weight cellulose in a homogeneous medium was studied spectrophotometrically using a stopped flow technique. By combining these results with determinations of the number of primary and secondary xanthate groups, the individual rate constants for the formation of these groups were calculated.The results show that the xanthate formation is a second order reaction determined by the concentrations of carbon disulfide and alcoholate.
