Notes: Spin coating of two commercially used polymer solutions is studied both theoretically and experimentally. Physical and rheological characterization of these solutions indicates that under the spinning conditions currently used they behave as nonvolatile, viscoelastic fluids with constant viscosity and elasticity. The corresponding Reynolds (Re) and Deborah (De) numbers are up to order unity. The theoretical analysis demonstrates and explains why, at very short times after the inception of impulsive spinning, the velocity and stress fields in such fluids develop in an oscillatory manner. The amplitude of these oscillations increases with the ratio of the retardation parameter to the Deborah number, whereas their damping rate gets smaller as De increases. Since these oscillations dissipate very rapidly, and before substantial thinning of the film takes place, the thinning rate, velocity, and shear stress components do not deviate eventually from those of a Newtonian fluid. Such a complete explanation of similar experimental findings has not been offered before. The radial normal stress component does increase considerably over its Newtonian value, and this explains certain "experimental practices.'' Similar oscillatory development early on occurs even at higher Re, as long as Re∼De, but it is dissipated again, this time because of the abrupt thinning of the film. The theoretical results are in good agreement with experimental measurements of "dry film'' thickness and with dynamical measurements of "wet film'' thickness during spinning, which are reported herein for the first time. Care must be taken in reporting "dry film'' thickness because the commercial solutions under study retain part of the solvent after "soft baking'' over a hotplate. Complete solvent removal produces dry films, but requires treatment in a vacuum oven, higher temperatures, and longer heating times.

Notes: The effect of machine parameters as well as size on dehulling performance of sunflower seeds have been studied using a centrifugal sheller Forward-curved impeller vanes made of aluminum gave highest dehulling efficiency (80.12%) than that with mild steel or rubber vanes. Large size sunflower seed (length 〉 10 mm) at 7.3% (d.b.) showed the higher dehulling efficiency (80.47%), minimum specific energy (7.42kJ/kg) and moderate non-recoverable kernel fraction (9.82%) using forward curved aluminum vane. However, the non-recoverable kernel fraction was found to be minimum (6.21%) with the medium size seed having average length between 8.0 and 10.0mm.

Notes: The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in the assessment of palpable supraclavicular lymph nodes. The material was analysed in 218 cases with enlarged supraclavicular lymph nodes in which FNAC was performed by the conventional method. In all cases cytological examination was performed on-site after staining the smears by the Papanicolaou method. In addition, air-dried smears, fixed smears, filter preparations from needle washings and cell blocks were studied. The FNAC diagnosis was supported by examining cell blocks which added the reliability of histological architecture; further support was obtained by tissue biopsy and/or comparison with the primary tumour in some of the cases. Eleven cases were diagnosed as inflammatory lesions and 41 cases were unsatisfactory because of scanty/acellular samples (despite two to three repeat samplings). However, in five of these, malignant tumours were later found on biopsy, which was done for persistent enlargement of the supraclavicular lymph node(s). Fifty-three cases were diagnosed as negative for malignancy (normal cellular elements, n = 15; reactive elements, n = 38) and 12 cases were suspicious of malignancy. In 11 cases a diagnosis of lymphoma was made on histology and in 90 cases metastatic tumours were diagnosed. The overall sensitivity was 92.7%, specificity 98.5%, positive predictive value 97.3% and the negative predictive value was 94.8%. Based on our study we feel that FNAC of palpable supraclavicular lymph nodes as a first line of investigation is a cost-effective procedure and is not only useful in the diagnosis of various lesions but can also help in deciding on appropriate management. Furthermore, the histological architecture from cell blocks can be correlated with cytology, and such material can be used for appropriate histochemical and immunomarker studies, which can be useful in enhancing the diagnosis.

Notes: : Field studies were conducted to investigate the effects of tillage practices on the saturated hydraulic conductivity, and quantity and quality of surface runoff water resulting from the application of the liquid swine manure as a fertilizer. As part of the study, infiltration experiments were conducted on silt-loam soil with no-tillage (NT) and disk tillage (DT) practices. Liquid swine manure was applied on test plots, and the rainfall was applied by the portable rainfall simulator. The infiltration data was analyzed for the saturated hydraulic conductivity (K8) and runoff volume determinations. The surface runoff water was analyzed for total N, total P, ammonia, and nitrate concentration determinations. The study indicated that the tillage had significant effects on Ks, and quantity and quality of runoff water. The Ks values of the NT plots were found to vary from 0.693 to 1.734 mm/min, with a mean of 1.494 mm/min, while they varied from 1.056 to 2.543 mm/min, with a mean of 2231 mm/mm in the DT plots. The total N, total P, ammonium nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen concentrations were lower in runoff generated from DT plots, compared to that from the NT plots. The chemical concentration levels were significantly different in runoff waters collected one-day after manure application than in those collected 40-days after the manure application. Study suggested that the DT practice must be preferred over the NT practice if liquid swine manure is used as the fertilizer. The study is further continued to assess the long-term impacts of swine manure application and tillage on the quantity and quality of surface runoff water.

Notes: Secretory carcinoma (SC) of the breast is a rare variant of breast malignancy and its cytological features in fine needle aspirates have only recently been described. In this communication, our experience with four cases of SC of the breast is presented in which the diagnosis was established on fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). In all cases, the samples were cellular and featured diffuse, prominent, intracytoplasmic vacuoles and secretion in malignant cells and occasional signet-ring like forms. The cytodiagnosis of SC in all the cases correlated with subsequent examination of cell blocks of the aspirate and tissue. Cytochemical stains showed diffuse positivity for mucin by alcian blue stain in the vacuolated cells which was periodic acid–Schiff positive and resistant to diastase digestion. Oil-red O staining was negative. Immunopositivity to carcinoembryonic antigen, cytokeratin (CAM 5.2), B72.3 and epithelial membrane antigen was found in malignant cells. The cytodiagnostic criteria for SC of the breast, characteristic cytological features which are useful in a correct FNAC diagnosis and differentiation from other pertinent breast carcinomas, are discussed.

Notes: Somatosensory evoked potentials were recorded in 20 healthy volunteers and 20 patients with chronic pain undergoing electro-acupuncture therapy. The values of absolute peak latency and amplitudes of N19 and P22 in the control group were compared with the corresponding baseline values in the study group and after electro-acupuncture therapy at three stages during a 10-treatment cycle. On these occasions the intensity of pain was recorded using a 100 mm visual analogue scale score. Each patient in the study group had 10 treatments given on alternate days. The absolute peak latency of N19 was significantly delayed (p 〈 0.05) in chronic pain patients when compared to the control group. This increase in latency of N19 persisted after the first electro-acupuncture treatment (p 〈 0.05), tended to revert to normal after the fifth treatment (p 〉 0.05) and reverted completely to control values after the 10th treatment (p 〉 0.05). Visual analogue scores also decreased significantly (p 〈 0.05) after the fifth and 10th electro-acupuncture sessions. These observations suggest that there is an interaction of the neural mechanisms of electro-acupuncture with the thalamic generator of somatosensory evoked potentials i.e. N19.
