Notes: Abstract Hydroxyapatite powders were made by reacting orthophosphoric acid with calcium hydroxide and dense bioactive coatings were subsequently produced by the plasma spray technique. Three types of hydroxyapatite (flame spheroidized) monolayer coatings and three types of functionally graded coatings were manufactured. It was found that average microhardness values of monolayer coatings decreased as the indentation load increased. The relationship between indentation load and indent diagonal length observed Meyer's law. Microhardness and fracture toughness of coatings were affected by characteristics of feedstock powders for plasma spraying. The indentation fracture toughness of coatings could be significantly increased by incorporating a toughening phase. ©1999 Kluwer Academic Publishers

Notes: Abstract Increasing demand for higher performance dielectric material for multi-layer ceramics packaging has led to the use of the AlN system due to its very high thermal conductivity and coefficient of expansion compatibility with silicon. This paper reports on a novel process method used to produce an AlN/Al2O3 composite powder system which can be subsequently tape cast as a dielectric substrate. The mixture of both Al2O3 and AlN was first mechanically alloyed and then spray-dried to obtain a suitable agglomerated powder that was subsequently plasma-sprayed, resulting in a fine micrometer level integrated composite powder. The two main criteria used to ascertain the optimal process parameters during plasma spraying were a high gamma/alpha Al2O3 phase ratio, which ensured that all the Al2O3 phase had melted during plasma spraying, and a minimal reduction in the AlN/Al2O3 ratio to ensure minimal change in the AlN during processing. For the plasma-sprayed composite powders, fully sintered ceramic tapes were produced attaining〉99.0% of the theoretical density after sintering at 1650°C for 6 h, which yielded a thermal conductivity value of 32.0 W m−1 K−1.

Notes: The degree of crystallinity in polymers is commonly known to significantly affect their mechanical properties. To that extent, it also affects the mechanical properties - such as compression, buckling, and creep - of thermoplastic composites that are matrix dominant. For this reason, it is important that the degree of crystallinity in a thermoplastic composite be precisely determined, which is the focus of this paper. In particular, the crystallinity for a thermoplastic poly(phenylene sulfide) composite reinforced with glass fibers is determined using an X-ray diffraction technique (XRD). While conventional methods have been adopted for homogeneous phases, a modified method has been adopted to account for the heterogeneous nature of the composite. The results have also been compared with results obtained using DSC and DMA techniques, indicating that the XRD method yielded lower values, which are considered to be more accurate. This was attributed to the absence of a recrystallization effect in the XRD method, which was unavoidable in the other two methods.
