Notes: Abstract. Steam generator tubing inspections use the impedance of a differential eddy current probe inside a tube as an indication of incipient failure. An axisymmetric finite-element computer code has been developed and utilized to calculate the impedances of the differential probe. The calculated values have been validated by comparison with experimental results. A Z -parameter model for a probe inside a steam tube utilizing differential coils is described, and the response of Z -parameters for the differential probe under various changes in the steam tube configuration is investigated.

Notes: Abstract A first-order finite element formulation is used to model an eddy current differential bobbin coil probe scanning a tube with axisymmetric flaws. A multifrequency signal normalization scheme is developed to allow direct comparison between experimental measurements of the differential bobbin coil probe signal and finite element calculations of the probe coil impedance. Results demonstrate that both magnitude and phase of the differential bobbin coil impedance are useful in characterizing flaws in tubing for multifrequency scans.

Notes: Abstract Theoretical calculations of eddy-current phenomena often involve the numerical evaluation of various integral expressions. A discussion of some of the possible evaluation methods and of the factors to be considered in choosing a method is presented.
