Notes: Summary Poly-l-lysines containing nucleic acid bases, that is, adenine, thymine, uracil and theophylline were synthesized. The nucleic acid base substituted l-lysine derivatives were prepared from α,N-Cbz-l-lysine and the p-nitrophenyl esters of the carboxyethyl derivatives of the nucleic acid bases. The polymers were obtained from these l-lysine derivatives by the NCA method.

Notes: Summary Polyacrylic and polymethacrylic derivatives containing different contents of pendant uracil and thymine units were prepared by the polymeranalogous reaction using cyclic derivatives of uracil and thymine. The ability of the interaction between thymine bases in the copolymer chain was found to be parallel to the thymine content.

Notes: Summary As a new type of the nucleic acid analogs, poly-L-lysine derivatives containing adenine, thymine and uracil were prepared. By using the activated ester method, carboxyethyl derivatives of the nucleic acid bases were grafted onto poly-L-lysine. The thymine and uracil derivatives were completely substituted to poly-L-lysine. The content of adenine unit in the polymer, however, was less than that of the thymine analog.

Notes: In order to clarify the mechanism of catalysis of polyvinylamine-copper(II) chelates on the initiation of vinyl polymerizations, stability constants of these chelates were measured by applying a modification of BJERRUM'S method, and each concentration of the chemical species was estimated on the basis of the chelate theory. From these results, the activity of the polyvinylamine-copper(II) chelates for the polymerization of acrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate at different pH values was discussed.

Notes: The emission and the ultraviolet spectroscopies were studied at 77 K in water/ethylene glycol or ethanol for polymers containing adenine, 6-(methylamino)purine, and 6-(dimethylamino)purine moieties, and for the corresponding dimeric and monomeric model compounds, in order to obtain more information about the nature and extent of the interactions between nucleic acid bases in the polymer chains. The emission spectra of the dimeric compounds and the polymers suggested the formation of excimers and the existence of strong interactions between the adenine rings of suitable compounds. These excimer emissions were not observed in the spectra measured in ethanol, and in water/ethylene glycol solutions at pH 2. The ultraviolet spectra suggested two kinds of base-base interactions for plane in plane and coplanar arrangement.

Notes: Polymerization of acrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate was studied in the presence of an α-amino acid ester and copper(II) ion in dimethyl sulfoxide solution. The initiation mechanism of the polymerization by the α-amino acid ester/copper(II) system was refered to the complex forming properties of the system, confirmed by spectroscopic measurements. The polymerization of both monomers was influenced by the kind of the α-alkyl group of the α-amino acid esters, but it was not affected by the kind of the ester groups. The carboxylic group of the esters was found to affect only the polymerization of methyl methacrylate. Based on the results, the character of the free radicals was discussed.

Notes: Chelate formation of vinylamine/vinyl alcohol copolymers with copper(II) was studied both by the spectrophotometric and by titrimetric methods. For comparison, polyvinylamine/poly(vinyl alcohol) mixtures were also taken up for measurements. In the case of the copolymer systems, copper(II) ions were found to be coordinated exclusively by nitrogen atoms of the copolymer ligand. The complexation constants of the chelates were determined by applying the modified Bjerrum method, in neglect of the acid dissociation of hydroxy groups in the copolymers. It was found that the copolymer/Cu(II) chelates tend to be unstable with decreasing contents of NH2 groups in the copolymers. In the homopolymer mixture systems, copper(II) ions are not coordinated by the oxygen atoms of poly(vinyl alcohol), but only by the nitrogen atoms of polyvinylamine.
